Chapter 69

the files began downloading onto elias's encrypted server, a slow, agonizing progress bar inching across the screen. there were terabytes of data: wiretap transcripts, offshore accounts, and video files of politicians taking bribes. i finally let out a shaky breath, believing for one naive second that we were going to win. i tucked mia and leo into the only bed that hadn't been destroyed, wrapping them in heavy wool blankets. as i sat by the window, watching the fog roll through the dark pines, my phone buzzed in my pocket. it was a burner phone elias had given me, a number no one was supposed to have. my hands trembled as i answered. "you look tired, honey," my husband's voice crackled over the line. "you should really step away from the window."
