Chapter 46

With the bridge destroyed, Ryan had bought them precious time. He quickly maneuvered the SUV off the remaining section of the bridge and onto a hidden logging trail that led deep into the dense, ancient forests of the Apennine Mountains. The trail was treacherous, overgrown and nearly impassable, but it was exactly what Ryan needed to evade the approaching helicopters.

They drove in silence for hours, the adrenaline slowly giving way to exhaustion. Lily and Mia huddled together in the back seat, their eyes wide with lingering fear. Ryan’s heart ached for them. He had promised them a life free from this violence, and he had failed.

Just before dawn, they reached a secluded, dilapidated farmhouse hidden in a remote valley. It was one of Silas's off-the-grid safehouses, stocked with provisions and untraceable communications equipment.

Ryan carried the girls inside and settled them onto a dusty but comfortable sofa, covering them with heavy woolen blankets. He then moved to the kitchen, where Silas was already setting up a secure satellite uplink.

"The estate is gone, Ryan," Silas reported grimly, looking at the encrypted data scrolling across his screen. "Marcus burned it to the ground after he realized you escaped. He's furious."

Ryan poured himself a glass of water, his hands steady despite the exhaustion. "Let him burn it. The house was just bricks and mortar. The girls are safe. That's all that matters."

"For now," Silas cautioned. "But Marcus won't stop. He's mobilizing his entire network across Europe. He has contacts in Interpol, local law enforcement... he's going to turn this continent upside down looking for Mia."

Ryan stared out the window at the rising sun, the golden light painting the rugged mountain peaks. He knew Silas was right. They couldn't run forever. If Marcus wanted a war, Ryan would give him one that would shake the foundations of the underworld.

"We don't run," Ryan said, his voice quiet but filled with absolute resolve. "We go on the offensive. We dismantle his network before he can organize a proper hunt. We find out who is funding him, who his allies are, and we cut them down one by one."

Silas nodded, a grim smile touching his lips. "It's going to be bloody, kid."

"It always is," Ryan replied, his eyes turning cold. "But this time, I'm ending it permanently."
