Chapter 14

The words swam before Ryan’s eyes. *Our daughter.*
The room seemed to tilt beneath his feet. Five years ago, before Emily, before the peace accords that legitimized his empire, Ryan and Maria had shared a brief, chaotic history. When she disappeared, Marcus had presented forged bank transfers showing she had embezzled millions and fled to Europe. Ryan had spent months grieving, feeling betrayed, before eventually rebuilding his life, marrying Emily, and having Sarah.
It had all been a lie. Marcus hadn't just staged a coup; he had rewritten Ryan's entire past to position himself as the loyal protector while burying Maria and Ryan’s firstborn child alive inside the estate’s infrastructure.
"Lily," Ryan choked out, kneeling down to eye level with the trembling child. "How long have you had this?"
"Always," Lily said, her voice barely louder than the hum of the ventilation shafts. "Mama hid me in the cupboard under the floor when the loud noises started. She told me to be quiet as a mouse. Then the man with the scar closed the door from the outside and put the big wooden wall up."
Footsteps thudded heavily above them. Marcus’s men were inside the master bedroom now, tearing apart the closet. Heavy tools struck the back of the hidden panel. They were trying to breach the tunnel.
"Ryan!" Emily's panicked voice echoed up from the bottom of the service stairs below. "Ryan, they're in the courtyard! The gates are locked down!"
Ryan grabbed Lily, lifting her frail, feather-light body into his arms. "Hold onto my neck, sweetheart. Don't let go."
He sprinted down the narrow iron spiral staircase, his boots clattering against the metal rungs. At the bottom lay the estate's sub-basement, an interconnected web of wine cellars, boiler rooms, and forgotten coal chutes dating back to the nineteenth century.
Emily stood near the heavy reinforced door that led toward the underground garage, clutching Sarah tightly to her chest. When she saw Ryan carrying Lily, her face tightened with a mixture of terror and confusion.

"Ryan, what is going on?" Emily asked, tears streaking her pale cheeks. "Who is that girl?"
Ryan looked at his wife, the guilt crushing his chest, but there was no time for deception. "She's Maria's daughter, Emily. And she's mine."
