Chapter 32

the grand clock in the foyer chimed 1 a.m. as ryan carefully lifted the frail girl from the hidden compartment. she weighed almost nothing, her small frame shivering in his strong arms. he carried her to the master suite, locking the heavy doors behind him, with lily trailing close behind like a protective shadow. as mia ate the sandwiches with ravenous hunger, ryan paced the floor, his mind racing through a dangerous labyrinth. his sister, isabella, had died in an explosion arranged by a rival syndicate—or so he had been told by his right-hand man, victor. if this was isabella's daughter, it meant the crash was a lie. and worse, the people who hid her were living right under his roof, eating at his table. there was a sudden, sharp knock at the bedroom door. ryan drew his suppressed pistol, signaling for lily and mia to hide in the walk-in closet. he swung the door open, only to find victor standing there, a strange, knowing smile playing on his lips.
