Chapter 30

Ryan stood frozen on the sterile white tiles, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The man standing before him looked older, his hair completely snow-white and his cheekbones sharper than Ryan remembered from his youth, but there was no mistaking the cold, aristocratic line of his jaw or the deep, gravelly timbre of his voice.

"You’re alive," Ryan rasped, his voice trembling with a mixture of profound shock and burning, murderous hatred. "You let me mourn you. You let me bury an empty box."

Julian smiled faintly, tapping his silver cane against the polished floor. "A necessary theater, Ryan. When the Department of Justice began investigating our biomedical subsidiaries twelve years ago, one of us had to take the fall. Your mother was more than happy to play the grieving widow while managing the public assets. But Evelyn was always small-minded. She thought in terms of real estate, trust accounts, social standing. She never understood the grand design."

Julian gestured toward the glass partition where Maya lay sleeping, her chest rising and falling in deep, chemically induced slumber.

"What grand design?" Ryan hissed, straining against the zip-ties cutting into his wrists. "Kidnapping children? Turning this house into a torture chamber? You kept Lily trapped in a six-inch drywall passage behind my daughter’s bedroom!"

Julian’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, clinical disgust. "Lily was an accident. Maria was never supposed to carry that child to term. When Maria fled with her, Evelyn panicked and hid the child in the estate walls to keep her away from me. Evelyn wanted Lily as leverage against me, Ryan! She knew that as long as she possessed the firstborn female of my renewed line, I couldn't legally execute the sovereign trust transfer without her consent."

"And Maya?" Ryan nodded toward the glass.

"Maya is the completion of the line," Julian said, his eyes glowing with an unsettling, fanatical pride. "She carries the pure genetic markers of the Sterling lineage, free from the corporate encumbrances of your grandfather’s will. With your signature on the legal conservatorship transfer today, Ryan, every asset held by Evelyn’s shell companies will be consolidated under Maya’s name—managed exclusively by me."

"I will die before I sign a single page for you," Ryan spat.

Julian sighed, shaking his head with the disappointed patience of a schoolmaster. "You always were sentimental, Ryan. Just like your mother. You think you have a choice. But you’ve forgotten where we are."

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, remote monitor. He flipped the screen toward Ryan.

On the screen was a live, infrared video feed from inside the Manhattan Depository’s secure vault chamber.

Emily was sitting on the floor, holding Chloe and Lily tightly in her arms. But the emergency lights inside the vault were no longer red. They were flashing a violent, rapid amber.

"The atmospheric scrubbers in that vault are controlled via a secondary bypass line tied to this facility," Julian said calmly, his thumb hovering over a digital slider on the screen. "In ninety seconds, I can reverse the ventilation intake. The oxygen level in that room will drop to zero in less than four minutes. Your wife. Your precious daughter Chloe. And Maria’s little runaway, Lily. They will choke to death in the dark while you watch."

Ryan lunged forward with a primal roar, but Marcus immediately stepped in, driving the butt of his tactical rifle deep into Ryan’s gut. Ryan collapsed to his knees, gasping for air as agonizing pain radiated through his ribs.

"Bring the documents," Julian instructed Marcus coldly.

Marcus set a thick leather portfolio on a steel examination table, uncapping a heavy black fountain pen and placing it beside the signature line.

"Sign it, Ryan," Julian whispered, stepping up to his kneeling son, his cane pressing firmly against Ryan’s collarbone. "Save your family. Give me the girl."

Ryan knelt on the floor, his breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps. He looked at the live monitor. He saw Emily’s face—pale, terrified, but holding Chloe’s hand with unwavering strength.

And then, Ryan heard it.

It wasn't coming from the monitor.

It was coming from beneath the concrete floor of the medical ward.

*Tap-tap-tap... tap-tap.*

A faint, metallic vibration echoed through the copper water pipes running beneath the sterile white tiles.

Three taps. Then two taps.

Julian froze. His pale blue eyes widened, darting down toward the floorboards beneath his feet. For the first time, a flicker of genuine, unadulterated fear flashed across the old man’s face.

"Marcus," Julian whispered, his voice suddenly sharp and breathless. "Did you sweep Sub-Level C?"

Marcus frowned, his hand dropping to his sidearm. "Sub-Level C was sealed off five years ago when Maria died, sir. There’s nothing down there but the old cistern."

*Tap-tap-tap... tap-tap.*

The tapping grew louder, heavier, reverberating through the iron pipes with the unmistakable force of steel striking steel.

And then, through the ventilation grate set directly into the base of the wall behind Julian, a voice rasped into the silence—a woman’s voice, hoarse, broken, and dripping with an unimaginable, five-year hunger:

"Julian..." the voice whispered from the dark below. "You forgot to lock the cistern."
