Chapter 15

Emily staggered back as if Ryan had struck her. Her eyes darted from Ryan’s haunted expression to the filthy, silent child clinging to his neck, then down to Sarah, who looked between both girls with innocent curiosity.
"Yours?" Emily whispered, her voice cracking. "You told me Maria left you. You told me she took the money and abandoned the family."
"Marcus lied to all of us," Ryan said, his voice hard as iron even as his soul fractured. "He killed her. He stole the syndicate reserve fund and framed her for it, then threw Lily into the wall cavity behind the pantry to rot. Sarah found her because Sarah has her mother’s heart. But right now, Marcus has fifteen armed men between us and the main road. If we don't move, none of our children will see tomorrow."
Sarah stepped forward, slipping her small hand into Lily’s dirty, trembling palm. "I told you my daddy would fix it," Sarah whispered to the other girl. "He doesn't let bad men win."
Lily looked down at their joined hands, a single tear cutting a clean path through the grime on her cheek.
Before Emily could answer, the heavy steel door behind them shrieked under the blow of a thermal torch. Sparks rained down through the seams of the frame. Marcus had brought commercial breaching gear.
"The garage is cut off," Ryan said, analyzing the tactical map burned into his memory. "Marcus knows the primary escape routes. But he doesn't know the drainage tunnels under the east reservoir. They were sealed fifty years ago."
"Can we get the girls through there?" Emily asked, setting her personal shock aside, her maternal instincts instantly overriding her heartbreak.
"It’s flooded knee-deep in some sections," Ryan said, checking his magazine. "Seven rounds left. I have an emergency cache hidden in the old generator vault halfway down the line. We gear up, we get you three through the drainage line into the woods, and I circle back."
May you like
"No," Emily said, grabbing his forearm with fierce determination. "You don't circle back to die for a ghost, Ryan. You get all of us out."
Suddenly, the steel door buckled inward with a deafening crash, blowing open in a cloud of black smoke.
