Chapter 64

the deafening crack of elias's glock echoed through the small pharmacy, shattering the fluorescent bulb above the man in the suit. i didn't wait to see if the bullet hit him or just grazed his shoulder. taking advantage of the shower of sparks and falling glass, i grabbed the basket of antibiotics and bolted through the shattered front door. the heavy rain instantly soaked through my clothes, masking the sound of my frantic footsteps. i threw myself into the driver's seat of the pickup, slamming the gearshift into reverse before my door was even closed. as the tires spun on the slick asphalt, the man stumbled out of the pharmacy, clutching his bleeding arm. he raised his pistol, taking careful aim at my windshield. i ducked below the dashboard just as the glass above me exploded.
