Chapter 96 - The Burning Meridian

The mag-train—a black, unmarked diesel locomotive designed to run covert cargo during the Cold War—blasted through the forgotten mountain conduit at eighty miles per hour, emerging from the eastern ridge of the Appalachians into a world transformed into an alien nightmare.

The dawn was not red; it was an incandescent sheet of emerald and ultraviolet.

High above the Chesapeake Bay, three massive crystalline needle-craft, each three thousand feet long, hung inverted over the water. They were not firing down; they were pulling the water *up*. A colossal pillar of sea-foam and vapor, hundreds of feet in diameter, was being drawn skyward into the bellies of the vessels, transformed by their internal engines into a dense, glowing fog that spread across the Virginia coast like an iridescent shroud.

"Perimeter defenses at five miles," Hayes shouted over the roar of the diesel engine as the train tore across an abandoned rail yard outside Richmond. "Look at the checkpoints, sir!"

David raised his binoculars. Through the cracked glass, he saw the outer ring of Raven’s Spire.

The guard towers were occupied not by mercenaries, but by regular United States soldiers—hundreds of them—standing completely rigid along the concertina wire. They didn't move. They didn't blink. Thin, crystalline threads, glowing with a soft blue light, ran from the collars of their uniforms up into the low-hanging iridescent clouds, twitching like marionette strings.

"They aren't dead," Captain Miller whispered, lowering her scope, her face pale as ash. "They’re chained. The network is using their nervous systems as organic repeaters to amplify the field."

"Then we don't shoot them," David ordered coldly. "Aim for the emitters on the ground pylons. We sever the local grid, their central nervous systems reset. Move!"

The train didn't brake. David slammed the throttle to the firewall, bypassing the manual safety stops. The twenty-ton locomotive smashed through the outer perimeter gate with a deafening crash of tearing steel and splintering oak ties.

The marionette soldiers along the fence line didn't scream or scatter. In unison, their heads snapped toward the speeding train, their eyes glowing with the same pale, blank azure light as the needle-craft above. As one, they raised their rifles and opened fire.

A storm of 5.56mm lead hammered the reinforced steel hull of the engine like heavy hail. Inside, David kicked open the side cargo door.

"Suppressing fire! Non-lethal vector! EMP charges on the pylons!" David shouted, leaning out into the wind.

He raised an M79 grenade launcher loaded with a specialized low-frequency resonance canister salvaged from the Thule vault. He sighted the primary pylon—a thirty-foot steel antenna pulsing with blue light that Eleanor’s contractors had erected in the center of the rail yard.

David squeezed the trigger.

*THUMP.*

The canister arched through the emerald-tinted air, striking the base of the pylon with pinpoint precision. There was no explosion of flame; instead, a massive shockwave of inverted magnetic energy rippled outward in a circular ring.

The blue light shattered like spun glass.

Instantly, the soldiers along the fence line dropped their rifles. As the resonance field severed, their legs buckled, and dozens of men collapsed into the mud, gasping for breath, vomiting, clutching their heads as their own consciousness slammed back into their brains.

"Pylon down!" Hayes roared, racking his shotgun and blasting the reinforced lock of the rail switch ahead. "Path to the primary silo is clear!"

The locomotive derailed intentionally on the reverse siding, grinding to a halt against the concrete foundation of the primary intake bunker. David was the first out of the cab, his boots hitting the wet gravel before the train had fully settled.

He didn't look at the sky. He didn't look at the shattered needle-craft circling overhead.

He looked at the heavy blast door marked with the bronze seal of the Vance Foundation.

The door was already unlocked. A trail of fresh, dark blood was smeared across the handle, leading inside.
