Chapter 44 - The Broken Heir

Deep beneath the bedrock of Site Raven-Nine, the launch facility hummed with thirty thousand volts of raw electrical potential. The air was sterile, chilled to fifty degrees to keep the supercomputing arrays from melting under the load of the brute-force biometric decryption.
In the center of the subterranean cathedral sat Julian Vance.
He was strapped into a titanium acceleration seat bolted directly into the floor above the missile gantry. Dozens of silver fiber-optic cables extended from a heavy, pressurized collar locked around his throat, pulsing with iridescent blue light as they sank micro-needles into his spinal cord. His eyes were wide, glazed, the pupils dilated to the rim of his irises. Drool trickled down his chin, soaking into the immaculate dress uniform Eleanor had forced him into before strapping him down.
"Look at you, my darling," Eleanor's voice purred. She walked around the perimeter of the chair, wearing her midnight-black tactical trench coat, her diamond earrings catching the sterile LED glare. Her fingers, cold and manicured, traced the contours of Julian's trembling jaw. "So noble. So majestic. The world refused to see your brilliance. They allowed that gutter-born Marcus to strip your medals. They allowed Arthur's spineless bureaucracy to turn you into a punchline."
"M-Mother..." Julian whimpered, his teeth clicking together as a wave of high-voltage data surged through his nervous system. "Please... it hurts. My head... it feels like it's burning. I don't... I don't want the medal. Let Marcus have it... please..."
*SLAP.*
The sound cracked like a gunshot across the cavernous silo. Julian's head snapped to the side, a crimson welt blooming on his pale cheek.
Eleanor stood over him, her face transformed into a mask of contempt and ancient rage. "Do not speak his name in my presence! You are my son. You are the Vance who was destined to rule this nation from the ashes of its weak-willed republic! Marcus was an accident—a stray hound Arthur brought back from a dead woman in the desert! You carry my blood! You carry the lineage of the architects who built this country's shadows!"
She tapped the control screen on the console beside him. A searing arc of electricity flashed through the collar, and Julian threw his head back, a silent, agonizing scream tearing from his lungs as his muscles locked rigid.

"Just a little longer, my sweet boy," Eleanor whispered gently, smoothing down his tousled golden hair as if tucking him into bed. "When Eclipse launches, the entire corrupt political order that betrayed us will vanish in a cloud of odorless fog. And from the safety of this mountain, you and I will step forward to rebuild the world in our image. Marcus will be nothing more than ashes on the wind."
