Chapter 9 - The Changing of the Guard

At 8:15 p.m., the ballroom doors were closed and barred to the public.

Only active-duty officers, non-commissioned officers, and official defense delegates remained inside. The atmosphere had shed the artificial glitter of a social banquet; it had transformed into the solemn, austere reality of a military command transition.

General Hayes returned to the podium.

"Officers of the Division," Hayes announced, his voice reverberating through the hall. "The promotion of Major Daniel Carter is formally revoked. The billet for the Commander of the 16th Special Reconnaissance Brigade is vacant."

He paused, looking across the sea of green and blue uniforms. Every pair of eyes was forward.

"By order of the Secretary of the Army, effective immediately, Lieutenant Colonel Emily Carter is promoted to the rank of Colonel."

A collective intake of breath rippled across the room.

Undersecretary Vance stepped forward, holding the silver eagles that signify the rank of full Colonel. General Hayes stepped to my right side; Vance stood to my left. Together, they removed the silver oak leaves from my shoulders and replaced them with the polished silver eagles.

"Colonel Carter," General Hayes said, rendering a crisp, textbook salute. "Take charge of your brigade."

I returned the salute, my fingers touching the edge of my cap with geometric precision.

"Sir, I assume command."

When I turned to face the room, the officers rose as one single, disciplined body. There was no theatrical applause, no hollow cheering. There was only the thunderous, unified snap of four hundred heels clicking together, followed by the silent, absolute respect of four hundred salutes rendered to a combat veteran who had earned her place in the dirt, the fire, and the blood.

In that moment, the shadows of my childhood—the cold dinners, the belittling remarks, the constant reminders that I was nothing compared to my brother—dissolved into absolute irrelevance. I was not Eleanor’s discarded daughter. I was not Daniel’s quiet sister.

I was the Commander.
