Chapter 47 - The Architect's Parlor

The launch capsule was a pristine glass-and-steel island suspended directly over the missile’s nose cone.

Inside, the air smelled of ozone and expensive perfume. Eleanor Vance stood behind the central console, holding a nickel-plated semi-automatic pistol pointed directly at Julian’s temple. Julian was barely conscious now; his head lolled to the side, bloody saliva dripping onto his lap, his skin taking on a sickening grayish-blue hue as the neural collar drained his nervous system to feed the decryption matrix.

"Drop the weapon, Marcus," Eleanor said smoothly. Her finger rested lightly on the trigger. "Or I blow your brother’s brains across this glass before the launch sequence even finishes."

I stood in the doorway, the HK416 trained directly between her eyes. "Julian won't survive the launch anyway, Eleanor. That collar is burning out his cerebral cortex. Look at him! You're sacrificing your own golden child for a monument to your vanity!"

Eleanor laughed—a high, brittle sound that echoed off the ballistic glass. "Sacrifice? Julian is being immortalized! When the world remembers the Great Reckoning, they will remember his name! They will build statues of him! What would you know about greatness, Marcus? You, who were content to crawl through the mud of foreign deserts for a pension and a piece of silver ribbon!"

"Marcus..." Julian’s cracked voice barely carried over the hum of the computers. His bloodshot eyes found mine through the haze of agony. "Marcus... shoot her. Please... end it..."

"Shut your mouth, Julian!" Eleanor hissed, pressing the barrel hard into his skull. "I gave you life! I gave you rank! I gave you the Vance name!"

"No," Arthur’s voice boomed from the threshold behind me.

The General walked into the capsule, soaked in freezing water and grease, his uniform torn, but his eyes blazing with an authority that Eleanor had never seen in forty years of marriage. In his hands, he held the pin of an M67 fragmentation grenade he had retrieved from the dead mercenary outside.

"You gave him a prison, Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a deadly, gravelly whisper. "And you gave Marcus nothing. Yet Marcus is the only true soldier this family ever produced."

Eleanor sneered, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "Arthur... you old fool. You think you can intimidate me with a grenade? If this room breaches, the pressure seal fails, and the launch sequence bypasses directly to manual firing!"

"I don't need to intimidate you, Eleanor," Arthur said quietly, stepping in front of my rifle. "I just need to keep your eyes on me."
