Chapter 33 - The Sins of the Patriarch

The heavy silence of Sub-Level 3 was violently shattered as a second bunker-buster struck the surface installation above. The blast resonated through the bedrock, a deep, bone-crushing *THUMP* that caused the overhead lighting grid to swing violently on its steel tethers. Sparks cascaded from a ruptured junction box in the corner, hissing against the damp concrete.

"Don't listen to him!" Eleanor suddenly screeched, lunging forward with a frenzy that defied her age. Her hair, previously pinned in an immaculate, severe updo, fell in wild strands around her pale, contorted face. "Thomas, do something! He has no authority here! The Joint Chiefs don't control this facility—it's off-book! It was funded through the private contracting annex!"

"The annex that was seized by federal marshals forty minutes ago, Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm amid the falling dust. He casually extended the gold-sealed folder toward Thomas's personal security detail. "Special Agent Miller, Sergeant Major Hayes. If you don't secure General Thomas Vance in three seconds, you will be classified as enemy combatants under Title 50, Section 3093. You will not see a military tribunal. You will be transferred directly to ADX Florence for the rest of your natural lives."

The two operators flanking Thomas exchanged a single, split-second look. Years of loyalty to money and institutional power evaporated in the face of the Chairman’s direct authority and the resurrection of the man who had built their original unit. Without a word, Sergeant Major Hayes stepped back, holstered his sidearm, and snapped to rigid attention.

"Hayes, you traitorous bastard!" Thomas bellowed, drawing his custom Sig Sauer in a desperate, frantic arc aimed directly at Arthur’s chest.

Before Thomas’s finger could complete the trigger pull, I moved.

Fifteen years of being the discarded son, five years of carrying the phantom agony of shrapnel in my lung, and six hours of enduring the suffocating hypocrisy of the Vance family coalesced into pure, mechanical violence. I closed the distance across the metal walkway in three strides, my right hand clamping down over the slide of Thomas's pistol, forcing the barrel toward the steel ceiling.

*CRACK.*

The 9mm round discharged harmlessly into an overhead ventilation duct. In the same motion, I drove my left elbow into Thomas's solar plexus, knocking the breath from his lungs with a wet, ragged gasp. I twisted the weapon from his grip with a brutal torque that fractured his trigger finger, sending the pistol clattering across the grated floor.

Thomas collapsed against the console, clutching his ribs, his face flushed purple as he gasped for air.

"Marcus... please," Julian whimpered from the floor, crawling toward me on his hands and knees, tears carving clean lines through the grime on his cheeks. "We're brothers. Marcus, look at me! You know I didn't know the full extent of it! Mother said it was just politics... she said the reports had to be altered for the good of the country!"

I looked down at the golden boy. The brother whose silver tea sets had been polished while my field kits were packed. The brother whose fraudulent Silver Star had been paid for in the blood of twelve men left behind in the burning ruins of the Al-Qaim border post.

"The good of the country?" I whispered, my voice devoid of anger, leaving only a hollow, terrifying clarity. "Or the good of Julian Vance’s Senate campaign?"

Eleanor rushed between us, her manicured fingers clawing at my chest, trying to shove me away from her favored son. "Don't you touch him! You're a savage, Marcus! You were always a savage, born to bleed in the sand just like your father! You don't belong in polite society! You never did!"

"That's enough, Eleanor," Arthur’s voice boomed, carrying the full weight of a theater commander. He walked up behind her, placing a heavy hand on her shoulder. "The masquerade is over. The ballroom is empty. And the piper has come for his pay."
