Chapter 130 - The Skyward Counter-Strike

The grounds of Blackwood were a militarized kill zone.

Decades of aristocratic opulence had been swept aside to reveal the true nature of the Vance dynasty. The ancient boxwood hedges were lined with razor wire and motion sensors; the fountains where David’s mother had hosted high-society garden parties were now reinforced pillboxes housing heavy automated machine guns.

Yet, David knew every inch of this terrain.

He had mapped these woods as a boy to escape his father's brutal physical trainers; he had hidden in these ravines when Arthur had hunted him with paintball guns and attack dogs under the guise of "leadership conditioning." What had once been a child's desperate survival strategies had now become the infiltration profile of a Tier-One operator.

David moved like a ghost through the falling snow.

He bypassed the primary carriage drive where automated turrets were sweeping the tree line. Instead, he slipped into the old drainage conduit beneath the estate’s historic wine cellar—a tunnel his grandfather had built during the Cold War as a fallout shelter escape route.

The iron grate at the tunnel mouth was secured with an electronic biometric lock.

David reached into his pocket and pulled out the severed finger of General Harrison Vance, which he had taken before leaving the frozen Atlantic. He pressed the dead general's print against the optical scanner.

*BEEP.*

"CLEARANCE ACCEPTED: DIRECTOR LEVEL. WELCOME HOME, GENERAL."

The heavy iron door swung open with a hydraulic hiss.

David slipped inside, the heavy door sealing shut behind him. The air inside the subterranean tunnels was warm, humming with the low-frequency vibration of the massive power conduits running through the walls. The smell of pine and snow was replaced by the familiar, sterile odor of ionized air, hydraulic fluid, and ozone.

He moved down the arched brick corridor, his sidearm raised, clearing every blind corner with clinical precision.

At the end of the corridor, where the old cellar met the modern reinforced blast doors of the deep bunker, David found the security station. Two private Vance security contractors, dressed in matte-black exoskeleton armor, were monitoring the perimeter feeds on multi-screen displays.

They never heard him approach.

David closed the distance in three silent strides. His combat knife found the soft seam between the neck armor and the helmet of the first guard; before the second could raise his submachine gun, David seized the fallen guard’s carbine and fired two suppressed rounds through the second man’s visor plate.

Both guards collapsed without a sound.

David stepped over the bodies and sat down at the security terminal. He inserted the data drive Admiral Lawson had given him—the drive containing General Bradley’s sovereign counter-codes.

The terminal flashed:

"ENTER SOVEREIGN BLOODLINE CIPHER TO INITIATE SYSTEM OVERRIDE."

David looked at the prompt.

In the ballroom, on the night this nightmare had begun, the Commanding General had opened a sealed folder and read a name that had caused his mother’s face to pale and Arthur’s smug grin to vanish. It had not been Arthur's name. It had not been Harrison's.

It had been his.

David was not his father's discarded failure; he was the primary biometric key. The entire sovereign network had been locked to the genetic code of the firstborn son who survived the trial of fire. Arthur had been augmented because his natural body had failed the calibration. David was the only one whose pure, unaugmented DNA could authorize a total system purge.

His father hadn't tried to kill him because he was an embarrassment.

His father had tried to break him so that he would enter this bunker willingly, take the throne, and initiate the final purge as the new Sovereign King.

David pressed his bare palm onto the glass scanner of the console.

A sharp needle pierced the pad of his hand, drawing a drop of blood.

The screens flashed from amber to brilliant, blinding emerald green.

"BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED: VANCE, DAVID. RANK: CAPTAIN. HEIR TO THE SOVEREIGN MANDATE."

"ACCESS GRANTED TO INNER SANCTUM."

A deep, pneumatic groan echoed through the concrete bunker as the forty-ton blast doors leading to the central silo began to slide apart.
