Chapter 65 - The Shattered Bastion

The air inside the tunnel was stale, heavy with the smell of engine grease, damp earth, and ninety-year-old river brine. Down here, the violent cacophony of the fifty-caliber fire above was reduced to a dull, rhythmic thudding that vibrated through the limestone walls.

Miller was slumped against the damp stone, gasping for air, his hand clamped tightly over his left bicep. Dark, arterial-colored blood was seeping between his fingers.

"You hit?" I demanded, dropping to one knee beside him and pulling a combat dressing from my trouser pocket.

"Flesh wound... caught a piece of concrete shrapnel when the willow blew," Miller grunted, his teeth clenched as I ripped his sleeve open and bound the wound with brutal efficiency. "Marcus... Sterling’s men... those weren't private contractors. I saw the insignia on their plate carriers under the blackout tape. That's the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment. They’re active duty, Marcus. Sterling has mobilized a domestic black unit."

"I know," I said, tying off the bandage with a sharp yank that made Miller hiss. "The entire command structure is fractured. If the Dover strike package has launched, half the Pentagon thinks they're responding to a foreign cyber strike, while the other half is being arrested in their offices."

Behind us, Eleanor was sitting on a rusted iron munitions crate, her knees pulled up to her chest. Her wet hair hung across her face like cobwebs. The pristine elegance that had once commanded the elite ballrooms of D.C. was completely destroyed.

"He was going to kill me," she whispered, her voice a hollow rattle in the dark. "Sterling... we dined together every Sunday for twenty years. Robert called him Uncle Arthur. He looked at me... and told them to kill me."

I walked over to her, standing tall in the narrow tunnel, looking down at the woman who had made my life a living hell from the day I was born. "He told them to kill you because you're useless to him now, Eleanor. You were a signature on an shell company ledger. Once Robert signed the transfer codes in the ballroom, you became an operational liability."

"Your father warned me," she said, her voice barely louder than the dripping water. She raised her head, looking at me with eyes that were entirely empty. "Before he died... in the hospital room at Walter Reed. He told me that Arthur would come for the children. He told me to keep you away from the service. He told me that if you ever put on the uniform, Sterling would find a way to use you."

I froze, the blood running cold in my veins. "What did you say?"

"You thought I hated you, Marcus," Eleanor whispered, a bitter, twisted smile touching her pale lips. "You thought I favored Robert because he was charming, because he smiled for the cameras and played tennis at the country club. I hated you because you looked like him. You had his eyes, his posture, his horrific sense of duty. And your father told me... that the day you took the oath, Arthur Sterling would write your execution warrant."

"So you tried to crush me," I said, my voice shaking with a cold, controlled fury. "You humiliated me in front of the Joint Chiefs. You stripped my promotions. You had Robert take credit for my operations in Iraq."

"I tried to make you a civilian!" she suddenly screamed, her voice echoing down the dark tunnel. "I tried to get you dishonorably discharged! I wanted you disgraced, broken, working in a bank, driving a cab—anything that would keep you out of the command loop! Because I knew that if you rose high enough to hold a field clearance... Arthur would use the Black Sky protocol to burn the world!"

Miller looked up from the floor, his eyes wide in the gloom. "Marcus... she's not lying. Look at the drive."

I pulled the titanium cylinder from my coat pocket. On the miniature OLED display embedded along its spine, a digital countdown had begun, glowing with an ominous amber hue:

*T-MINUS 00:22:14 TO ORBITAL LINK CONFIRMATION.*

"It's not an activation key," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow to the chest. "It’s a dead-man's override. If I don't plug this into the Raven-Nine terminal beneath the slipway within twenty-two minutes... the satellite network automatically initiates a strike on every major military installation on the eastern seaboard."
