Chapter 84 - Sub-Zero Vector

The descent through the thermal updrafts was a nightmare of turbulence. The twin rotors of the Osprey screamed against the shearing crosswinds created by the monolith’s displacement. As the aircraft plunged into the fog bank of superheated steam, visibility collapsed to zero.
"Warning: terrain proximity!" the automated flight avionics chimed in a frantic rhythm. "Pull up! Pull up!"
"Hold your vector!" David shouted to the pilot. "The canyon is three hundred meters wide! Drop us onto the shelf!"
A violent shudder racked the airframe. The starboard engine surged, spitting a gout of orange flame as it ingested supercooled moisture, but the pilot wrestled the stick, slamming the heavy transport onto a shelf of hard-packed blue ice with a brutal jolt that blew out the nose gear.
The rear ramp dropped with a hiss of pneumatic pressure. Instantly, an arctic gale roaring at seventy miles per hour rushed into the cargo bay, carrying with it a biting chill of forty below zero mixed with the sharp stench of pulverized rock and burnt metal.
"Move! Move!" David barked, leading the twelve-man tactical detachment down the canted ramp.
Their boots hit the ice, crampons digging into the slick surface. Behind them, two more transport choppers touched down, disgorging elite operators from the Vanguard unit—men who had fought alongside David through the dark corridors of Tartarus-Alpha and the shadow wars across three continents.
Above them, the sheer bulk of the alien hull blotted out the entire sky. Looking up was like standing at the base of a continent suspended upside down in the clouds. Pulse waves rippled across its matte-black skin, each hum shaking the very marrow of David’s bones.
"Captain!" one of the engineers shouted, pointing a ground-penetrating radar wand at the jagged cliff wall ahead. "The primary fissure opened a crevasse right through the bedrock! Look at the perimeter structure!"

Fifty yards ahead, exposed by the sheared glacial wall, was not natural stone. It was a massive hexagonal blast door forged from weathered titanium-tungsten alloy, covered in heavy frost. Stenciled in black across the central locking ring was the emblem of the United States Department of Defense, flanked by a seal David knew all too well: the private crest of the Vance family patriarch.
And beneath the seal, carved deep into the steel plate, was a warning: *THE THRESHOLD OF THE SECOND DAWN. ENTER ONLY IN EXTINCTION.*
