Chapter 121 - The Threshold Sovereign

The rotunda began to tear itself apart.
The transparent armor-glass overlooking the trench cracked from corner to corner under the immense vibrational force of the railgun’s capacitor bank. Miles-deep ocean water began to spray through the micro-fractures in high-pressure jets that sliced through the obsidian consoles like diamond-tipped lasers.
*"What have you done?!"* Eleanor’s voice reverberated through the collapsing chamber, her magnetic cradle swinging wildly as the ceiling structural beams buckled. *"You will drown us all! You will drown the entire continent!"*
"The continent survived without you, Eleanor," David gasped, blood pooling in his mouth as he held his palm pinned against the needles, refusing to break the connection. "And it'll survive without the Vance name."
The railgun fired.
There was no sound—only an instantaneous, blinding flash of pure kinetic fury that inverted the colors of the rotunda. A three-ton solid tungsten penetrator, accelerated to Mach 25 within a forty-foot barrel, punched straight through the base of the Primary Spire.
The impact was cataclysmic.
The spire did not simply shatter; it detonated from the inside out, unleashing a tidal wave of golden antimatter energy that vaporized the black basalt terraces across the trench floor. The magnetic containment field collapsed instantly, and the raw, superheated pressure of the Earth’s mantle geysered upward into the freezing abyssal deep.
Arthur’s body collapsed on top of David, the violet light draining from his eyes, leaving only the pale, ruined corpse of a boy who had spent his life chasing a crown he never understood.
Above them, Eleanor’s cradle snapped from its mounts.
She crashed to the deck ten feet away, her bio-mechanical shell cracking open to reveal the withered, dying woman beneath. The cables in her neck sparked violently, smoking with the bitter stench of burning meat and ozone.
She reached out toward David with a trembling, blackened hand.
"David..." she wheezed, her real voice—thin, frail, terrified—breaking through the alien static for the first time in his life. "The... the six dreadnoughts... in the sky..."
David dragged himself out from beneath Arthur’s corpse, clutching his bleeding side, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He looked through the web of shattered armor-glass.
The Primary Spire was collapsing, falling in slow motion into the magma trench. But the leviathan in the sky had not retreated.
Through the tactical feed embedded in the ruined console, David saw the telemetry of the upper atmosphere.
The six dreadnoughts had completed their alignment. They were not falling to the earth. They were not exploding.
Instead, the destruction of the Primary Spire had triggered an autonomous, subterranean failsafe that his father had hidden beneath the bedrock of the entire planet.
From the shattered core of the falling spire, a blinding, crimson beam of directed energy shot straight through the ocean, through the five miles of water, through the storm clouds, and directly into the obsidian rift in the heavens.
And on the tactical display, a new message flashed in stark, white text:
**THRESHOLD CARRIER SIGNAL TERMINATED.**
**PHASE TWO INITIATED: PLANETARY PURGE PROTOCOL.**
**THE SOVEREIGN KING HAS ENTERED THE SYSTEM.**
Across the entire bridge of the *Nautilus-Omega*, the alarms went silent.
Through the broken glass of the rotunda, four miles beneath the surface of the Atlantic, the water began to turn dead-white. The temperature monitors on the console dropped precipitously—from fifty degrees, to freezing, to absolute zero in a matter of seconds.

From the dark depths of the magma trench below, something far larger than the spire began to open its eyes.
David Vance stood alone in the flooding rotunda, his service blade in his hand, his Silver Star crushed against his chest, staring into the dark as the ocean froze solid around him...
