Chapter 86 - Ghost in the Permafrost

The descent took twenty minutes through corridors reinforced with interlocking armor plates capable of withstanding a direct nuclear surface detonation. As the team pushed deeper into Station Epsilon, the temperature began to rise, warmed by the hum of an immense hidden infrastructure.

They emerged onto an observation catwalk that overlooked an underground cavern three times the size of Tartarus-Alpha’s primary silo.

"Mother of God," Hayes whispered, lowering his night-vision goggles.

Suspended in the center of the subterranean abyss was a device that looked like a captured sun. It was an inverted spire of interlocking magnetic rings, hovering around a core of glowing, superheated plasma that pulsed with rhythmic precision. Surrounding the machine were dozens of automated diagnostic banks, their monitors glowing with green phosphor text that had been processing data unattended for over two decades.

Suddenly, the floodlights along the catwalk flickered, humming with sudden voltage.

In the center of the main platform, a projection unit clicked on. Coherent blue light formed in the center of the room, resolving into the towering, three-dimensional figure of General Arthur Vance, dressed in the service uniform he had worn before his supposed death.

*"If you have breached the threshold of Epsilon, David, then the orbital horizon has fallen,"* the holographic construct said, its voice synthesized from old vocal logs but eerily lifelike. *"Eleanor thought I was building an empire for Vance. She believed power was measured in bank accounts, corrupt congressmen, and board seats. She was small-minded. She could never see beyond the horizon of her own greed."*

The holographic figure turned, gesturing toward the pulsing machine beneath the catwalk.

*"Fifty years ago, an anomaly was recovered from the Mariana Trench. It was a beacon, David. It was not of human origin, and it had been transmitting a signal into deep space for ten thousand years. We managed to decode three words before we silenced it: 'THE HARVEST APPROACHES.' Tartarus-Alpha was designed to build the casing. But Epsilon—Epsilon is the weapon."*

The projection leaned forward, its eyes seemingly locking directly onto David’s face.

*"It is not a missile, David. It is a planetary disruption lance. It requires the Vance biometric encryption to align the targeting telemetry. But hear me carefully: once ignited, there is no shutting it down. It will either pierce the hull of the Harvester... or rip our atmosphere into space."*
