Chapter 117 - The Ghost of the Pentagon

The *Nautilus-Omega* slipped past the outer thermal perimeter of Trench-Nine at forty-three minutes past midnight.

At this depth, nearly twenty-five thousand feet beneath the Atlantic surface, the ocean was an ink-black void of crushing pressure—more than a thousand atmospheres pressing against every square inch of the submarine’s reinforced hull. The titanium bulkheads groaned with a continuous, metallic shriek that sounded like an iron beast slowly being crushed in a vice.

"Look at the forward thermal cameras," Sterling commanded quietly.

David, now back on the bridge with a hydraulic combat brace locking his fractured shoulder in place and three ampoules of neural stabilizers coursing through his veins, stared into the primary monitor.

The seabed did not look like nature.

The ocean floor had been excavated across a span of twenty square miles. Massive, terraced structures of black basalt and polished obsidian rose from the silt, forming a subterranean necropolis of colossal proportions. At the center of the complex sat an amphitheater of cyclopean dimensions, anchored to the tectonic bed by twelve massive hydraulic pylons, each the width of a skyscraper.

And rising from the center of the amphitheater was the tip of the Primary Spire.

It had pierced the crust from above, punching through the mantle like an iron nail driven into an oak table. Around its base, superheated magma boiled against geothermal containment fields, illuminating the abyssal dark in a hellish crimson glow.

Docked against the obsidian terraces were dozens of specialized deep-submergence vessels bearing the insignias of the world’s most powerful defense conglomerates: Vance Strategic, Lockheed-Martin’s Black Projects Division, and the long-rumored, unacknowledged Directorate Seven of the Pentagon.

"They're all here," Sterling muttered, his knuckles white against the chart table. "The entire shadow cabal. While the surface world burns, while the coastal cities drown in forty-foot surges, the elites packed their bags and descended into the vault."

"Sir!" the sonar operator hissed. "An automated docking umbilical is deploying from Terrace Three! They're hailing us on the Archon frequency!"

"They think we're an automated supply courier from the Groton skunkworks," Sterling said, glancing at David. "This is our only window. Once we lock into that pressurized collar, there’s no blowing the tanks, no retreating. We either take the control node, or we suffocate four miles under the Atlantic."

"Prepare the boarding party," David said, his voice razor-sharp. He pulled his combat helmet over his head, locking the tactical visor into place. "Twelve operators. Suppressed carbines, magnetic breaching charges, and armor-piercing kinetic rounds. We aren't taking prisoners."

"And if Eleanor is in the command rotunda?" Sterling asked quietly.

David racked the charging handle of his SIG Sauer MCX Spear, the heavy 6.8mm round chambering with a crisp, lethal snap.

"My mother told me in front of the Joint Chiefs that I had no place in her world," David said, his eyes burning behind the amber tint of his visor. "It's time to show her what she built."
