Chapter 118 - Eleanor's Transmutation

The pressurized umbilical locked onto the *Nautilus-Omega*’s dorsal escape trunk with a deafening, hydraulic clang that shook the entire frame of the submarine.

"Equalizing pressure," the lock technician whispered. "Atmospheric readings inside the facility: seventy-two percent nitrogen, twenty-one percent oxygen, seven percent... unknown trace particulates. Temperature is forty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Gravity is reading one-point-two Gs."

"Artificially augmented gravity," David murmured, testing the seal on his environmental combat suit. "The spire's mass is distorting the local physics."

The inner hatch swung open, followed immediately by the automated hiss of the outer airlock.

David was the first through the breach, his rifle raised to the high-ready, the thermal optic sweeping the broad, curved corridor beyond.

The facility did not resemble an industrial military installation. The walls were not made of corrugated steel or concrete; they were carved from a single, seamless block of dark, non-reflective composite that felt warm to the touch, like living skin over warm bone. Narrow conduits of bioluminescent gold ran through the ceiling, pulsing in synchronized rhythm with the low, hum of the spire rooted at the complex's core.

Lying along the deck were bodies.

Scores of them.

David stepped forward, his boots crunching on broken glass and spent shell casings. The corpses were clad in the high-end private security uniforms of Vance Strategic—men David had seen guarding his family's estates in Virginia and Long Island. But they hadn't been killed by gunfire.

Their flesh was blackened, desiccated, their eyes turned to white, calcified spheres. Their hands were clawed, frozen in gestures of agony as if every ounce of moisture and bio-electrical energy had been ripped straight through their skin.

"Neuro-kinetic feedback," Dr. Hall said over the squad comms, her voice shaking as she knelt beside a fallen mercenary. "The spire didn't integrate with them. When the central array powered up, the threshold frequency wiped out their nervous systems like an EMP hitting an unshielded radio."

"Keep moving," David ordered, motioning the five-man point team forward. "Rotunda is three hundred meters down this spine."

They moved through the silence of the sunken tomb, past automated defense turrets that hung limp and dead, their power cores drained by the parasitic entity at the center.

At the end of the grand promenade, two massive blast doors of solid manganese-steel had been peeled open like tin foil, the edges glowing with a faint, residual violet heat.

David stepped through the threshold into the Central Rotunda.

The space was vast—a cathedral of black obsidian four stories high, looking out through massive transparent armor-glass directly into the deep-sea trench where the Primary Spire hummed against the earth’s crust.

At the center of the rotunda, suspended inside a spherical magnetic cradle twenty feet above the polished floor, hung Eleanor Vance.

She was no longer human.

Cables of fibrous, translucent gold had pierced her spine, weaving through her neck and disappearing into the base of her skull. Her eyes were wide, glowing with a terrible, blinding violet radiance. Her tailored uniform had been stripped away, replaced by a carapace of calcified, geometric armor that was slowly growing over her ribcage like living coral.

At the base of the cradle, strapped to an operating table surrounded by dead surgical drones, lay Arthur.

His chest had been cracked open, held apart by mechanical spreaders. His heart was still beating, encased in a pulsing, mechanical sleeve that was pumping dark, luminous fluid directly from Eleanor’s cradle into his central aortic arch.

"David..." a voice rasped.

It didn't come from Eleanor's mouth. It echoed directly inside David's skull, vibrating through the Archon Marker embedded in his marrow with the force of an electric shock.

Eleanor's head tilted down, her blank, glowing eyes locking onto him from the center of the cradle.

*"You arrived... precisely as calculated,"* the voice echoed, vibrating with the chorus of a thousand alien tones. *"Your father thought he was clever. He thought he could hide the sovereign key inside an unwanted child. But the threshold does not care who is loved, David. It only requires the bloodline to unlock the primary conduit."*
