Chapter 91 - The Abyssal Trigger

The rage inside me didn't roar. It froze. It became a singular, diamond-hard point of absolute certainty.

"Thank you, Julian," I said quietly.

His grin faltered. The milk-white eye remained blank, but his good eye narrowed in sudden, sharp confusion. "For what?"

"For making this easy."

I squeezed the trigger.

The 9mm round caught him cleanly in the center of his forehead. The impact snapped his head backward, sending his ruined body slumping forward against the edge of the console. The wheelchair rolled back six inches, his blood dripping onto the steel decking in a steady, monotonous rhythm.

I didn't look at his body. I stepped over him, slamming my left hand onto the primary console, driving my burned palm into the biometric verification interface.

*“BIOMETRIC RECOGNITION: ARCHON SOVEREIGN HEIR DETECTED,”* the system chimed. *“IDENTIFICATION: EMILY STERLING. PURGE CASCADE AT 94%. ENTER REVOCATION CODE.”*

"Revocation Code: Eleanor's Grave," I said, reciting the hexadecimal alphanumeric string I had extracted from the cassette tape in the Black Forest.

The system paused. A brilliant green progress bar shot across the primary monitors:

*“REVOCATION CONFIRMED. GLOBAL LIQUIDATION HALTED. SOVEREIGN CONTROL TRANSFERRED EXCLUSIVELY TO EMILY STERLING.”*

A sigh of relief tried to escape my chest—until the lights in the rotunda snapped from pale green to an intense, pulsating strobe of midnight blue.

*“WARNING: PRIMARY HEIR CLAIM VERIFIED. EXECUTIVE DIRECTIVE 99 ACTIVATED.”*

A secondary voice, synthetic yet undeniably modeled after Sarah Sterling’s smooth, patrician cadence, echoed through the pressurized room.

*“Hello, Emily,”* the computer spoke. *“If you are hearing this, Julian is dead, and you have reclaimed the Sterling name. But Sarah Sterling never built an empire to share it with a daughter she never knew.”*

The hydraulic locks on the rotunda’s primary blast doors slammed down with the force of guillotine blades.

Above me, the massive acrylic ceiling—holding back two hundred feet of Atlantic ocean pressure—began to screech. Deep, structural cracks splintered across the transparent arch, spiderwebbing outward toward the perimeter supports.

*“SCUTTLE PROTOCOL ENGAGED,”* Sarah’s synthetic voice whispered with chilling affection. *“TO INHERIT THE EMPIRE, YOU MUST SURVIVE THE GRAVE. SECTOR FLOODING IN SIXTY SECONDS.”*

A hairline fracture in the acrylic roof gave way, and a razor-sharp jet of black sea water blasted into the center of the room, striking the floor with the force of an industrial cannon.

Beside the master terminal, a hidden floor compartment hissed open, revealing a single, high-pressure emergency ascent pod—designed for only one occupant.

And on the terminal’s communications slate, a flashing red frequency suddenly blinked open, carrying an incoming audio transmission from Sanctuary Three:

*"Emily! Emily, do you copy?!"* Marcus’s panicked voice crackled through the static, weak but desperate. *"Vance isn't who he says he is! He just locked down the platform! He has the child, Emily! He found—"*

The transmission cut out into static as another crack exploded across the ceiling, and the freezing sea came roaring down into the dark.
