Chapter 87 - The Frozen Channel

The revelation did not make me cry. The time for tears had burned away in the salt mines of Altaussee and the burning ruins of the Black Forest. Instead, an icy, calcifying rage settled into the hollow spaces where my family had once lived.

"If Sarah was my biological mother," I said, my voice entirely flat, "then the entire legal foundation of Julian's claim to the estate is fraudulent."

"Julian knew that," Vance said. "That’s why he couldn't simply kill you. He needed you alive to interface with the optical and biometric arrays. Once the transfer protocols were initiated, you would have suffered a fatal 'neurological event' on that platform, and Julian would have legally absorbed the Sterling sovereign trust as your designated fiduciary."

"And now?"

"Now, the bunker is destroyed, but Julian’s contingency architecture is not entirely dead," Vance said, tapping a series of keys on the terminal. The screen shifted, zooming out from the genealogy tree to a global telemetry map. A red beacon pulsed rhythmically off the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. "Vault 404 was the primary key repository. But the executing servers—the machines that actually route the money and execute the political directives—are hosted on an oceanic node. The Gibraltar Sub-Basin Facility."

"Julian?"

"He didn't die in that mountain, Emily."

I spun around, staring at Vance. "I watched the thermobaric purge ignite. I saw the blast wave."

"Julian had a localized blast shelter beneath the central console. It was designed to withstand a nuclear strike. We intercepted an emergency satellite distress signal three hours ago, originating from the valley below the Black Forest. A mercenary extraction team pulled a severely burned, critically injured survivor out of the rubble. He was transported to a medical facility in Madrid, and from there, he was moved south."

Vance pulled up a surveillance still from a private airfield outside Malaga. A man wrapped in medical bandages, hooked to portable life support, being loaded into an armored medical transport. Even beneath the dressings, the cold, arrogant tilt of Julian’s head was unmistakable.

"He's going to Gibraltar," I said.

"He is going to initiate the global liquidation manually," Vance confirmed. "If he cannot own the Sterling trust, he will burn the entire network to the ground. That means crashing forty-two sovereign bond markets, releasing the blackmail files on six hundred European officials, and triggering an economic collapse that will take decades to repair. And he will do it under your name."

"How?"

"Because your biometric data was partially uploaded before you destroyed the optical scanner. To the financial clearinghouses in Basel and New York, every order that leaves the Gibraltar node will carry the digital signature of Emily Sterling."

I looked down at my hands. The skin on my left palm was raw and blackened, but my fingers still closed into a fist.

"How do I get to Gibraltar?" I asked.

Vance looked at me for a long moment, a slow, grim respect settling into his weathered features. "We don't have an army, Emily. We only have a transport submarine and six men who aren't afraid of dying in cold water."

"That's seven," I said. "Marcus stays here."

"Your brother won't like being left behind."

May you like

"Marcus has spent his whole life being protected by someone," I said, turning away from the glowing screen. "It's time I finished this alone."
