Chapter 69 - The Sovereign Fallacy

"The platform is destabilizing!" Marcus shouted over the roar of rushing seawater flooding the lower engineering decks. The explosion had severed the ballast pumps, and the entire multi-ton structure was listing ten degrees to the port side. "We have four minutes before the flare deck collapses into the ocean!"
Vance was groaning on the floor, clutching his broken arm, watching the digital countdown on the primary core clock tick toward zero. "You fool... you’ve triggered the Sovereign Fallacy... the failsafe..."
"What failsafe?" I demanded, hauling him up by his lapels.
"Sarah... Sarah didn't design this protocol to save the Board," Vance choked out, coughing up dark blood. "She designed it as a vengeance engine! If the Sterling heir didn't claim the Chairmanship by noon, the system doesn't just erase the data... it broadcasts every ledger, every video, every corrupt transaction to every open news network and law enforcement server on earth! The Sterling name... will become the most hunted name in human history!"
My breath caught in my throat.
Sarah hadn't been trying to hand me an empire. She had built a guillotine, knowing that if I refused the throne, I would drop the blade on everyone—including myself.
"Marcus! Get to the extraction winch!" I yelled, pulling Vance’s master keycard from his pocket.
"Emily, what are you doing?" Marcus roared over the deafening scream of twisting metal as the primary support pillars began to buckle.
"Sarah hid a hardcopy override in the submerged vault on Level 4!" I yelled back, checking my oxygen canister. "If that broadcast goes out without redactions, every innocent operative who ever helped me—including you—gets burned with them!"

"It's suicide!" Marcus grabbed my arm. "The lower levels are already submerged!"
"I've been drowning my whole life, Marcus," I said, breaking his grip. "Now run!"
