Chapter 6 - The Enablers' Panic

The first explosion occurred at precisely 1:15 PM at the high-end boutique downtown where my mother spent her Friday afternoons after Thanksgiving, hunting through post-holiday sales with her church friends.

Rachel and I were sitting in a quiet corner of a bakery across the street from the bank, drinking soup, when my silenced phone began to buzz furiously on the table. The screen showed three missed calls from Mom, followed immediately by a frantic voicemail.

I tapped the speaker icon.

My mother’s voice was pitched an octave higher than normal, trembling with a mixture of rage and profound social humiliation.

*"Emily! Where are you?! I am standing at the register at Talbot’s with Eleanor and Patricia, and your card just declined! The cashier tried it twice! Call the bank right this second and find out what is wrong with the network! Everyone is looking at me! I had to leave two coats and a handbag on the counter! Call me right now!"*

Rachel covered her mouth to stifle a laugh, but my eyes remained cold.

Ten minutes later, the second shockwave hit. This time, it was a text from Brandon:

*Yo, what the fuck is wrong with the card? I’m at the pump trying to fill the BMW and the screen says 'Card Canceled - Contact Issuer.' I don't have cash on me, Em. Transfer five hundred to my Venmo right now. I have a date tonight."*

I didn't reply. I watched the three dots dance on the screen as he typed, stopped, typed again, and finally sent:

*Are you ignoring me? Mom said you didn't sleep in your bed last night. Dad is furious. You better fix this card before he gets home from the hardware store.*

At 2:30 PM, the grand finale arrived. My father didn't text. He left three consecutive voicemails, each louder and more incoherent than the last.

*"Emily Jane Vance! What did you do to the checking account? I went to write a check to the contractor for the deck repairs and he called me saying the funds weren't available! The teller told me the balance was under four hundred dollars! Where is your salary? Where is the money for the mortgage?! You march your ungrateful ass back to this house right now! You think you can steal from this family after the disrespect you showed me at my table? I will call the police! I will have you arrested for theft!"*

I listened to his roar through the speaker, feeling a strange sensation wash over me: lightness.

For years, that booming voice had paralyzed me. When I was eight, it made me hide in my closet. When I was sixteen, it made me hand over my babysitting money. When I was twenty-two, it made me sign my name to a sixty-thousand-dollar debt to save his pride.

Now, stripped of his authority and stripped of my money, his voice didn't sound terrifying anymore. It sounded like a dog barking behind a fence it couldn't jump.

"Is he going to call the police?" Rachel asked, watching my face closely.

"I wish he would," I said, setting the phone face down. "I have the medical report, the photos of my throat, and the canceled checks showing whose money funded that house for thirty-six months. Let him invite the law into this. It'll be the last mistake he ever makes."
