Chapter 80 - The Vault Beneath the Stone

"My name is Emily," I said through gritted teeth, ignoring the handkerchief, my entire body trembling with adrenaline and rage.

"Names are legal fictions, child," Julian replied smoothly, motioning for his men to haul Marcus to his feet. Marcus was semiconscious, blood pooling from his nose, his limbs twitching from the residual voltage of the taser. "Your companion lives only as long as you cooperate. If you blink improperly, I will have him dismantled piece by piece before your eyes. Walk."

We were marched down into the bowels of the fortress, descending deep into the bedrock through a hydraulic elevator that dropped three hundred feet below the castle foundations.

When the doors opened, there was no dungeon. There was a subterranean laboratory—gleaming white polymer walls, rows of quantum server towers humming in climate-controlled isolation, and in the center of the circular chamber, a massive sphere of reinforced titanium alloy, ten feet in diameter.

"The Sovereign Core," Julian said, walking toward the sphere with an almost reverent gait. "Vance thought he had the master ledger. He didn't understand that his ledger was merely the operating system. This... this is the bedrock. The true ownership certificates of thirty percent of the world’s sovereign debt, the private land deeds of the Western Hemisphere, and the gold bullion repositories in Zurich, London, and Fort Knox."

"And it needs me to open it," I said, watching my reflection in the polished titanium.

"Your mother was a woman of extraordinary genetic pedigree," Julian explained, stepping beside me. "Her family designed this vault during the Cold War. The biometric locks do not merely read your iris pattern; they measure the vascular flow rate, the neural electrical impulses of the optic nerve, and the genetic markers in your cellular makeup. It cannot be spoofed. It cannot be taken from a dead eye."

He turned to me, his cold eyes glittering under the fluorescent lights.

"Eleanor thought she was stealing a weapon to protect herself from me," Julian smiled faintly, a terrifying, empty expression. "She didn't realize she was merely acting as an unpaid governess. She kept you alive, fed, educated, and conditioned to survive trauma. For that, at least, I owe her a debt of gratitude."

"She let Arthur beat me until I couldn't walk," I spat.

"And it made you resilient," Julian said coldly. "A weak girl would have folded under Vance’s audit. A weak girl would have signed the papers Arthur shoved in her face. But you fought. You took everything they threw at you, and you burned their world to ash. That is Croft blood, Helena. You are my greatest creation."

He gestured to the scanner platform in front of the titanium sphere. A circular glass pedestal glowed with a faint, violet reticle.

"Step onto the platform, Helena," Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a register that brook no defiance. "Open the Core. Take your seat as the matriarch of the new order. Or I will shoot Mr. Vance through the kneecaps, and we will begin testing how much pain your nervous system can endure before your optic nerve collapses."
