Chapter 100 - The Rupture of the Archons

The silence that fell over the observation deck was heavier than the sea beneath our feet.
Eleanor stood frozen, staring at the shattered glass of scotch, her entire world—her husband, her favored son, her social standing—dissolving into nothingness. She had sacrificed me, sacrificed her own soul, only to find herself an irrelevant footnote on an executioner’s balance sheet.
I looked at the little girl.
Her green eyes were locked on mine. She wasn't pleading. She was watching me, waiting to see what the older version of herself would do when backed into a corner.
*“You brought this on yourself, Emily.”*
My mother’s words echoed through the room like a curse.
"You're right, Vance," I said softly, stepping forward by an inch. "I was forged to be a monster. But they forgot to teach me how to surrender."
I didn't slide the drive.
I fired.
The MP5K barked twice in rapid succession. I didn't aim for Vance—I aimed for the massive high-pressure hydraulic pipe running along the ceiling directly above him.
The pressurized hydraulic fluid—boiling hot and under four thousand pounds of pressure—burst from the severed line in an explosive, blinding red vapor.
The superheated fluid struck Vance across the face and shoulders. He screamed, an animalistic shriek of agony, his pistol discharging blindly into the reinforced ceiling as the corrosive fluid blinded him.
In that split second of chaos, the child didn't freeze. She dropped to the floor, rolling toward the perimeter, exactly as if she had been drilled for this nightmare since birth.
"Run!" I screamed.
I charged forward, discarding the empty submachine gun. Vance, blinded and howling, swung his pistol wildly by sound. The round grazed my left bicep, tearing through the flesh, but the adrenaline burned away the pain.
I hit him at full speed, tackling him across the central terminal.
The impact shattered the glass interface, sending millions of digital figures glitching across the monitors. We tumbled across the floor toward the outer glass wall. Vance fought like a rabid dog, his heavy hands clawing for my throat, but I drove my combat knife straight down through his right wrist, pinning his gun hand to the floorboards.
He shrieked, his left hand coming up to gouge my eyes.
I didn't pull back. I gripped his tactical collar, drove my forehead into the bridge of his nose with a sickening crunch, and followed through with an elbow strike to his temple.
Vance went limp, his blinded eyes rolling back into his head, his breathing stuttering into unconsciousness.
I knelt over him, heaving for breath, blood dripping from my arm onto his chest.
Across the room, Eleanor was backing toward the emergency service exit, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at me—her daughter, covered in sea-salt, gunpowder, and blood.
"Emily..." Eleanor stammered, raising her manicured hands in a pathetic gesture of defense. "Emily, please... I’m your mother. Everything I did... I did it to keep us safe from Sarah..."
"Don't speak," I said, my voice dangerously low. "Don't you dare say another word to me."
The little girl crept out from behind an overturned desk, stepping quietly toward me. She reached out and touched my uninjured arm, her small fingers surprisingly warm against my frozen skin.
"Is it over?" the girl asked, her voice small, clear, and steady.
"Almost," I whispered, looking down at her. "What's your name?"
"Clara," she answered softly. "They called me Subject Two. But the papers said Clara."
"Clara," I repeated, feeling something hard and icy in my chest finally crack open. "I'm Emily. I'm your sister."
Behind us, the central terminal began to shriek with a high-priority emergency transmission.
The screen didn't display the Archon Council's seal. It didn't display the Swiss banking network.
It was an unmapped, deep-frequency broadcast transmitting from coordinates eighty degrees north—deep inside the Arctic Circle, from a facility that didn't exist on any map.

*“SOVEREIGN CARRIER DETECTED,”* the computer’s automated voice blared across the room. *“THE NINTH VAULT HAS BEEN OPENED.”*
