Chapter 58 - The Board Awakens

"The moment you activated the terminal in Altaussee without the Board’s authorization," Sarah whispered, her pulse monitor spiking, "you triggered the liquidation protocol. The twelve families who financed the reconstruction of Europe are pulling their credit lines."

"They're shorting their own banks," I realized, watching the cascading charts of red numbers plunge. "They're deliberately causing a sovereign liquidity crisis."

"They don't care about the banks, Emily!" Sarah coughed violently, blood flecking her pale lips. "They care about the leverage. When the Western financial markets seize by midnight, every government from Berlin to Washington will be begging the Board for an emergency sovereign loan. And the collateral they will demand... will be absolute legal immunity and sovereign territory."

"And they used me to initiate the run," I said, my blood turning to ice.

"You entered the master code," Sarah smiled, her breath fading into an irregular, labored rhythm. "To the world, the rogue daughter of the disgraced Sterling-Vance family just executed the greatest financial cyber-attack in human history. Interpol has already issued the red notices. Your assets in New York? Frozen. Your accounts in Zurich? Seized as evidence of international financial terrorism."

A sudden sound shattered the silence of the hospice—the sharp, distant crack of a suppressed rifle outside the courtyard.

The monitors flickered. The lights in the hallway outside abruptly died, plunging the facility into an eerie, amber emergency illumination.

"They're here," Sarah breathed, her eyes widening in genuine terror for the first time. "They don't leave witnesses. Not me. Not you. They don't even leave the ground we stand on."

I stood up, gripping my weapon. "Who are they?"

"The Seventh Family," Sarah gasped, clawing at the sheets as her heart monitor let out a long, unbroken warning beep. "The ones Richard answered to. The ones... who gave your father... his orders."
