Chapter 26 - The Unraveling of Eleanor

Dr. Thorne produced a battered tape recorder from the desk drawer and slid it toward me. Without a word, I slotted the cassette inside and hit *PLAY*.

The tape hissed with decades-old tape degradation before a voice crackled through the speaker. It was Richard Vance, twenty-six years younger, but carrying the exact same predatory swagger I had feared every day of my youth.

*"The contract is signed, Marcus,"* Richard’s voice boasted. *"The sister died this morning. The girl is legally under my guardianship. The Zurich vaults are registered under the name Aurelia Sterling, but under Swiss trust law, the guardian controls disbursements until the age of majority. Sixty million, Marcus. Sixty million in liquid bullion and bearer bonds."*

Then, another voice spoke. Cold, aristocratic, clipped with a European cadence. *"And your wife? Does she know the child’s mother didn't die of natural causes?"*

A collective gasp sucked the air from the interrogation room.

Eleanor’s head jerked up from the table, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror. "No... no, that's impossible. Sarah had leukemia. She was sick!"

The tape continued, Richard’s laughter echoing through the small room like broken glass.

*"Eleanor thinks what I tell her to think,"* Richard replied on the recording. *"She watched the nurse switch the IV drip herself and believed it was a palliative sedative. She's an idiot, Marcus. As long as I keep her wrapped in fur coats and give her a weekly allowance, she’ll nod and smile while I use the kid's inheritance to wash your syndicate's dirty paper."*

*"And the daughter?"* the man named Marcus asked. *"When she reaches twenty-six, the trust dissolves and defaults unconditionally to her sole biometric control. What happens then?"*

A chilling silence hung on the tape before Richard spoke again.

*"She won't live to see twenty-six. By the time she’s twenty-five, we’ll have liquidated ninety percent through the shell accounts. Then an unfortunate accident on the family estate... and the rest defaults to Julian as secondary heir. She’s nothing to me, Marcus. Just an unpaid ledger waiting to be cleared."*

The tape ended with a sharp mechanical click.

The interrogation room was as quiet as a crypt. The chaplain crossed himself. Dr. Thorne stepped back toward the door, her hand resting on the panic alarm, looking at Eleanor not as a grieving widow, but as an accomplice to a generational execution.

Eleanor was hyperventilating, her fingers tearing at her own hair. "He lied! Emily, I swear to you on my soul, I didn't know about the IV! I thought Sarah was dying anyway! The doctors said she only had weeks!"

"You sat by her bed," I whispered, the rage inside me solidifying into something cold, diamond-hard, and lethal. "You watched my mother die, and you helped him erase her child from the face of the earth. You spent twenty-six years beating me down, making me feel small, worthless, and indebted to you, because you knew the moment I stood up, your entire house of cards would burn to the ground."

"I was protecting you!" Eleanor screamed, her voice breaking into hysterical shrieks. "If Marcus knew you were alive, he would have killed you in the crib! Richard kept you alive as collateral! Don't you see? We saved your life!"

"You didn't save me," I said, picking up the two platinum keys and the original birth certificate, sliding them safely into my inside pocket. "You used me. And now the bill is due."

Before Eleanor could scream again, the facility’s emergency sirens began to wail.
