Chapter 145 - The Architecture of Deceit

Vance raised his sidearm instantly, centering the sights on the patriarch’s forehead. "Don't move. Put the pen down or I take your head off."
Arthur didn't flinch. He finished the stroke of his pen, blotted the parchment with a square of velvet-backed felt, and finally laid the gold nib across a sterling-silver tray. When he looked up, his pale blue eyes were entirely vacant of fear. They held the same cold, assessing disgust they had held the night I refused to sign over my trust fund at sixteen.
"A hired hand, Emily?" Arthur said, ignoring Vance completely as he turned his gaze on me. "You always did recruit from the gutter. Hayes had more pedigree in his left hand than this stray dog."
"Hayes is dead," I said, stepping forward until the barrel of my carbine was inches from his chest. "Eleanor is dead. The Zurich vaults are emptied. The bloodlines you traded on are burned to ash in the permafrost."
Arthur chuckled, a low, dry vibration in his chest that set my teeth on edge. "Do you honestly think Eleanor’s pathetic little life mattered to me? Your mother was an insecure, status-obsessed social climber who thought being Mrs. Sterling meant hosting garden parties in the Hamptons. She was useful for forty years to keep society’s eyes glued to the front porch while I dug the basement."
He stood up. He wasn't a hologram. He wasn't a digital ghost. He was flesh, bone, and iron, moving with the terrifying, deliberate grace that used to make the floorboards creak outside my childhood bedroom.
"You spent your whole life thinking you were saving this family," Arthur continued, walking slowly toward the thick acrylic window, clasping his hands behind his back. "You worked seventy-hour weeks at the firm. You managed the portfolios. You covered every scandal your idiot brother Vance manufactured. You thought you were the martyr keeping our heads above water."

He turned back to look at me, a cruel smirk touching the corners of his mouth.
"You were never the savior, Emily. You were the laundromat."
