Chapter 5

The morning sun cast long, cold shadows across the Vance estate. Brooke stood by the nursery window, holding her son, Leo, against her shoulder. The baby was warm and peaceful, a stark contrast to the storm raging outside the heavily fortified gates.

Through the glass, Brooke watched a line of three black police cruisers pull up to the wrought-iron barricade.

The intercom on the wall buzzed. "Ms. Vance," the voice of the head of security echoed. "The local authorities are at the gate. They are presenting an emergency court order signed by Judge Sterling. They demand immediate access to the premises to take custody of the children."

Brooke felt a cold spike of adrenaline pierce her chest. Garrett had actually done it. He had bought a judge in the middle of the night.

Marcus stepped into the nursery, his face carved from granite. He wore a dark suit, holding a cell phone in his hand. "They aren't getting in, Brooke. The gates are sealed."

"Dad, if you defy a court order, they will bring a SWAT team," Brooke warned, her voice trembling slightly as she held her son tighter. "They will turn this into a standoff."

"Let them," Marcus said, his eyes narrowing. "Judge Sterling is corrupt. My lawyers are currently at the federal courthouse filing a motion to stay the order and presenting evidence of Garrett's bribery. We just need to stall them for two hours."

Brooke walked over to the crib and gently laid Leo down next to his sleeping sister, Luna. She looked at her father, her mind racing with the tactical brilliance she had inherited from him.

"Stalling isn't enough," Brooke said, her voice turning cold. "If Garrett thinks he can use the law against us, we need to completely destroy his leverage. We need Kendra."

Marcus frowned. "The mistress? Why? She is loyal to him."

"She is loyal to money, and she is terrified of him," Brooke corrected, walking over to the desk and opening the encrypted tablet. "I watched his face in the hospital, Dad. Garrett was out of control. Kendra looked at him like she was looking at a monster. If she knows he's going down for embezzlement, she will turn on him to save herself and her child."

"You want to flip her?" Marcus asked, intrigued.

"I want to offer her a deal," Brooke said, pulling up a secure messaging app. "I have the burner number Garrett uses to contact her. I'm going to send her a message. Immunity, cash, and a safe way out of the city in exchange for the physical hard drives in Garrett's penthouse."

"It's a risk, Brooke," Marcus warned. "If she shows Garrett the message, he will know we are moving against his physical assets."

"He already knows," Brooke said, her fingers flying across the digital keyboard. "This is war, Dad. And in war, you attack the weakest flank."

She hit send, praying that Kendra’s maternal instinct was stronger than her greed.
