Chapter 1

The warm indoor lighting of the private maternity room offered a stark, ironic contrast to the freezing tension radiating from the doorway. Brooke reclined against the crisp white pillows, her breathing finally steadying after the agonizing hours of labor. She wore a delicate pink floral lace robe that draped softly over her shoulders, her pearl earrings catching the faint glow of the bedside monitor. A plastic hospital wristband clicked softly against the safety rail as she adjusted her posture.

The nurse, clad in blue scrubs and a floral surgical cap, moved with quiet, practiced efficiency. Wearing her medical mask and gloves, she carefully settled the swaddled newborn girl into Brooke’s waiting arms, supporting the tiny head with absolute gentleness. The baby wore a striped hospital cap, wrapped securely in a white blanket adorned with pink and blue stripes.

Standing in the open doorway leading to the corridor was Garrett Hale. He looked immaculate, completely untouched by the exhaustion of the day. His dark wavy hair was perfectly styled, a light shadow of stubble clinging to his jaw. He wore a sharp navy suit, a crisp white shirt, a black tie, and a white pocket square. A silver watch gleamed on his wrist. But it wasn't his attire that poisoned the room; it was the curly-haired toddler he held in his arms, dressed in a cream sweater, beige trousers, and white sneakers.

Beside Garrett stood Kendra Mercer. Her long blonde waves cascaded over a champagne satin gown, a small cream handbag clutched in her manicured fingers. She was the mistress, flaunted openly on the day Brooke gave birth.

"She won’t carry my name," Garrett said, his voice a low, echoing blade in the quiet room.

Brooke looked down at her daughter, feeling the warm, fragile weight against her chest. Her natural micro-expressions betrayed no hysteria, only a cold, hardened resolve. She lifted her head and steadily met his eyes.

"Then she’ll carry mine," Brooke replied.

The nurse shifted uncomfortably, adjusting the striped blanket around the safely cradled baby. She looked at the monitor, then toward the door, breaking the suffocating silence.

"We’ll bring your son next," the nurse stated softly.

Garrett froze. His gaze shifted sharply from the nurse back toward Brooke, the arrogant certainty in his eyes fracturing completely.

"You had a boy too?" Garrett demanded, his voice cracking with shock.

Kendra’s hands slowly lowered from her mouth as she looked toward Garrett, genuine panic flashing across her features.

Brooke turned her attention toward the nurse, completely ignoring her husband’s outrage. She didn't offer him a single word of explanation for the secret she had kept for nine months.

"Please take him outside," Brooke instructed the nurse, her tone even and absolute.

As the nurse approached the doorway, forcing Garrett and Kendra to step back into the corridor, Brooke lifted her phone to her ear with her free hand, her newborn daughter securely supported against her chest.

May you like

"Dad," Brooke said, her voice dropping into a chilling, lethal register. "I need you here."

She looked directly toward Garrett as the call connected, watching the blood drain entirely from her husband's face.
