Chapter 20

Midnight at the Vance Estate was a time of profound, sacred quiet. The storm that had raged across the city days ago had cleared entirely, leaving behind a crisp, starry sky that mirrored itself in the dark waters of the estate's private lake.

Brooke stood on the second-floor balcony outside the nursery, wrapped in a heavy cashmere shawl. The night air was biting, but she welcomed the chill. It kept her grounded, reminding her of everything she had survived to reach this exact moment.

Inside the nursery, through the open glass doors, she could hear the soft, rhythmic breathing of Leo and Luna sleeping peacefully in their cribs. They were safe. Their future was secured by an untouchable legacy of power, intelligence, and absolute protection.

Footsteps echoed softly behind her. Marcus stepped onto the balcony, holding a crystal glass of scotch. He handed it to her, leaning against the stone balustrade beside her.

"The stock opened up twelve points on the overnight Asian markets," Marcus reported quietly, a proud smile touching his lips. "You’ve officially doubled the company's valuation in less than twelve hours. Even your grandfather would have been impressed."

"He would have said I took too long," Brooke joked softly, taking a small sip of the amber liquid. She looked out over the sprawling, heavily fortified grounds. "Dad... do you ever think about walking away? Just selling everything, taking the kids, and living somewhere quiet where there are no gates, no guards, and no enemies?"

Marcus looked at her, his silver hair catching the moonlight. He considered the question for a long moment before shaking his head.

"When you build a fortress like this, Brooke, you realize that the walls aren't just there to keep the monsters out," Marcus said, his voice carrying the heavy wisdom of a lifetime in the shadows. "They are there to keep the world safe from what we have to become to survive."

Brooke looked down at her hand, where a simple platinum band—worn long before she ever met Garrett, a symbol of her own independence—glinted in the dark. She knew her father was right. The world outside was messy, cruel, and relentless. But she was no longer a victim of its cruelty. She was its architect.

Suddenly, her encrypted cell phone buzzed in the pocket of her cashmere shawl.

She pulled it out, expecting a message from her legal team or a late-night report from the security chief. But the screen displayed an unknown, untraceable number with a single text message attached to an audio file.

Brooke's breath caught in her throat. She tapped the play button, holding the speaker to her ear.

A low, raspy voice hissed through the tiny speaker, carried by the digital static of a burner phone from somewhere deep within the bowels of the federal holding facility downtown.

“Enjoy the crown, Brooke. But remember... a prison cell has four walls, and concrete always cracks. I’ll see you soon.”

The audio file ended with a harsh, mocking laugh that cut off abruptly.

Marcus noticed the sudden rigidity in his daughter's posture. He turned his head sharply. "What is it? Who was that?"

Brooke lowered the phone slowly, her brown eyes locking onto the dark horizon beyond the estate gates. The fear she had felt days ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, lethal, unyielding fire.

She looked at her father, offering a calm, terrifyingly confident smile.

"Let him try," Brooke whispered into the night air.

The legacy of the Vances was written in blood and steel, and the unwritten chapters were just beginning.
