Chapter 35

The tactical team swarmed the front doors, breaching the heavy mahogany with a localized explosive charge. Clara and Silas moved in flawlessly behind them, their weapons raised, sweeping the grand foyer.

The bodies of three Vance security guards lay on the marble floor, a grim testament to the element of surprise Graham's mercenaries had utilized. Clara stepped over the bloodstains, her heart hammering against her ribs, her mind entirely focused on finding her six-year-old son.

"Clear the ground floor!" Marco shouted, directing his men. "Move, move, move!"

Silas grabbed Clara’s shoulder, pulling her toward the grand staircase. "The study is upstairs. Stay behind me."

They ascended the stairs, the sound of the thunderstorm outside masking the crunch of broken glass beneath their boots. As they reached the second-floor landing, the heavy oak doors of the study slowly swung open.

Graham Hart stood in the doorway. He looked drastically different from the polished, arrogant patriarch who had humiliated Clara three years ago. His gray hair was wild and unkempt, his face gaunt from his time in federal prison. He wore a cheap suit that hung loosely on his frame. He looked pathetic, but the madness burning in his eyes made him incredibly dangerous.

He held a heavy revolver in his trembling hand, aiming it blindly down the hallway.

"Stop right there!" Graham screamed, his voice cracking hysterically. "Drop your weapons, or I swear to God, I will shoot the boy!"

Clara froze, her blood turning to ice. Standing behind Graham, a terrified, weeping Julian was being held by a massive, masked mercenary. The man held a combat knife to the child's throat.

"Julian!" Clara cried out, taking a frantic step forward.

"Mom!" Julian sobbed, struggling weakly against the mercenary's grip.

"Not another step, Clara!" Graham roared, waving the revolver wildly. "I have the server keys! I have the boy! You ruined my life, you ungrateful wretch! I spent three years rotting in a concrete cell because of your ledgers! Now, you are going to transfer every single dime of the Vance syndicate into my offshore accounts, or you will watch your son die!"

"Graham, you are completely surrounded," Silas said, his voice a low, terrifying hum of pure authority. He kept his assault rifle aimed squarely at Graham's chest. "There are forty armed men downstairs. You have one mercenary. If that knife even scratches my son's skin, I will take you alive and spend the next ten years making you wish I hadn't."

"Do it, Clara!" Graham shrieked, ignoring Silas entirely. "Transfer the money!"

"Okay! Okay, I'll do it!" Clara yelled, dropping her pistol to the carpet and raising her hands. She took a slow step forward. "Just let him go. Please, Father. Don't hurt him."

Graham smiled, a sick, victorious expression twisting his face. He lowered the revolver slightly, basking in the submission of his rebellious daughter. "I always knew you were weak, Clara."

"I know," Clara whispered.

In that split second of Graham's distraction, Silas moved. He didn't shoot Graham; he shot the mercenary holding Julian.

The suppressed rifle spat twice. The mercenary took a bullet directly to the center of his forehead, collapsing instantly, dropping the knife.

"Run, Julian!" Silas roared.

Julian scrambled away from the falling body, sprinting down the hallway toward Clara.

Graham gasped in horror, realizing his leverage was gone. In a blind panic, he raised the heavy revolver, aiming wildly at Clara as she ran forward to catch her son.

"Clara!" Silas shouted.

Silas threw his massive body into the line of fire just as Graham pulled the trigger.
