Chapter 39

The gunfire in the warehouse slowly died down as the last of Thorne's mercenaries surrendered or bled out on the concrete. Marco and his men secured the perimeter, forming a wide circle around the fallen cartel boss, leaving Clara alone in the center of the ring.

Alexander Thorne writhed on the floor, clutching his shattered knee, his expensive suit ruined by dirt and blood. He looked up at Clara as she approached him, the barrel of her 9mm pistol aimed directly at his chest.

"You're a monster," Thorne gasped, spitting blood onto the floor. "You destroyed the coalition. You ruined decades of business."

"You came into my city, Alexander," Clara said, her voice echoing coldly in the massive warehouse. "You targeted my husband. You empowered my father to threaten my son. You are a parasite, and your business is officially terminated."

Thorne laughed weakly, a pathetic, desperate sound. "If you kill me, the European bosses will never stop hunting you. You can't win a war against the entire world, Clara."

"I don't have to," Clara replied smoothly. "Because by tomorrow morning, the European bosses will receive a highly encrypted file containing every single piece of evidence proving you were skimming millions off the top of their shipping routes for the last five years. They aren't going to mourn you, Alexander. They are going to thank me for removing a thief."

Thorne’s face completely drained of color. He realized the sheer, comprehensive brilliance of her vengeance. She hadn't just defeated him tactically; she had destroyed his reputation and isolated him entirely.

"Please," Thorne begged, the arrogance finally breaking. "I have money. I have accounts you don't know about. I can give you everything."

"I already have everything," Clara said softly.

Before she could pull the trigger, the heavy steel doors at the back of the warehouse groaned open.

Clara spun around, her weapon raised.

Standing in the doorway, silhouetted against the dark, churning water of the lake, was Silas.

He looked pale, exhausted, and he was leaning heavily on a tactical cane, his side heavily bandaged beneath a dark trench coat. But he was alive. And he was standing.

"Silas," Clara whispered, lowering her weapon, tears of profound relief flooding her eyes.

Silas limped forward, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Clara. He ignored Thorne groveling on the floor. He walked up to his wife, reaching out to gently touch her face, wiping a smudge of soot from her cheek.

"You did it," Silas murmured, his voice thick with overwhelming pride. "You saved the empire."

"We saved it," Clara corrected, leaning into his touch.

Silas looked down at Thorne. The cartel boss was weeping, realizing that the apex predator had returned to claim his throne alongside his queen.

"Do you want to do the honors, or should I?" Silas asked Clara, his voice dropping into that familiar, lethal baritone.

Clara looked at Thorne, feeling nothing but a cold, absolute closure. "He isn't worth our bullets."

She turned to Marco. "Leave him here. Call the federal prosecutor we have on retainer. Tell him we have a gift for him. Let Thorne spend the rest of his life rotting in a supermax prison, knowing he was beaten by a schoolteacher."

May you like

Marco smiled grimly. "Yes, Boss."

Silas wrapped his good arm around Clara’s waist. Together, they walked out of the warehouse, leaving Alexander Thorne weeping on the concrete floor, his legacy entirely erased.
