Chapter 41

Three months had passed since Alexander Thorne was locked away in a federal supermax facility, and the blood of Graham Hart had stained the Persian rugs of the Vance estate. The city of Chicago had fallen into a quiet, terrifying rhythm, bowing entirely to the reign of Clara and Silas Vance. Clara stood by the reinforced floor-to-ceiling windows of her executive office at the pinnacle of the Vance-Hale tower, watching the gray, churning waters of Lake Michigan. She wore a tailored black pantsuit that fell with razor-sharp precision, the pale green diamond on her left hand catching the muted, stormy light. Her son, Julian, was safe, playing in the fortified gardens under the watchful eyes of their most lethal guards. Yet, the absolute silence of the underworld did not bring Clara peace. It brought anticipation.
The heavy oak doors of the office swung open with a soft click. Silas walked in, discarding a dark wool overcoat onto a leather chair. The wounds he had sustained during Graham's siege were fully healed, leaving behind jagged, silver scars that only deepened his terrifying aura. He walked up behind Clara, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"Marco intercepted an encrypted transmission originating from Zurich less than an hour ago," Silas murmured, his voice a low, dangerous rumble against her skin. "The remnants of the European coalition haven't completely surrendered. Thorne’s shadow still lingers in the dark."
Clara leaned back into his solid chest, her brown eyes scanning the horizon without a trace of fear, only cold calculation. "We severed their financial routing. We burned their logistics hubs to the ground and dismantled their port authority. Who is foolish enough to try and rally dead men?"
Silas reached into his suit jacket and placed a decrypted dossier on the mahogany desk in front of her. "He calls himself the Phantom. He’s former MI6, disavowed for extreme brutality, and he served as Thorne’s primary architect in the shadows. He has been silently liquidating Thorne’s hidden black funds, amassing millions to hire private military contractors. He wants to hit our supply chain directly."
"If he wanted to hide, he wouldn't be broadcasting from Zurich," Clara said, her fingers tracing the edge of the dossier. "He wants us to know he is coming. He is trying to force us into a defensive posture."

"Marco is mobilizing the port security forces," Silas stated, his eyes hardening. "I can have a strike team in Switzerland by midnight."
"No," Clara whispered, a chilling, brilliant smile touching her lips. "If he wants a war, we will not send soldiers to fight it. We will give him a stage. We are going to show the Phantom what happens when a ghost tries to haunt a queen."
