Chapter 40

One month later, the Vance Estate was fully restored, the damage from Graham's siege completely repaired. The mansion was quiet, bathed in the warm, golden light of a peaceful Sunday afternoon.

Clara stood on the private terrace overlooking the immaculate gardens. She wore a simple, elegant pale green dress—a defiant nod to the night she had been pushed into the fountain. But today, there was no fear, no humiliation. She was radiant, powerful, and utterly secure.

She watched Julian playing on the lawn below, chasing a golden retriever puppy they had adopted to help him heal from the trauma. His laughter echoed brightly across the grass, a sound that brought a profound, unbreakable peace to Clara's soul.

The heavy glass doors of the terrace slid open. Silas stepped out, walking without a cane now, his recovery nearly complete. He wore a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular forearms, looking completely relaxed.

He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"The final transfer went through this morning," Silas murmured, watching his son play. "The Rossi family officially ceded their port territories to us in exchange for a peace treaty. The city is entirely ours."

"It's quiet," Clara noted, leaning back against his solid chest. "I haven't heard a gunshot in thirty days."

"That's because there is no one left to challenge the Queen," Silas smiled, kissing her neck softly. "You terrify them, Clara. Half the lieutenants are more afraid of displeasing you than they are of me."

"Good," Clara laughed, turning in his arms to look up into his storm-gray eyes. "We built this fortress together, Silas. And I am never going to let anyone threaten it again."

Silas reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small, velvet box.

Clara frowned in confusion. "Silas, we're already married."

"I know," Silas said, opening the box. Inside was a breathtaking, custom-designed necklace featuring a flawless, pale green diamond. "But our wedding was a secret. It was a transaction made in the shadows. I want to renew our vows. In the light. In front of the entire city. I want everyone to see the woman who saved my life and rules my empire."

Clara stared at the diamond, her heart overflowing with a love so fierce and deep it ached. The man who had pulled her from the wreckage of her family had given her the world, and she had fought a war to keep it.

"I don't need a public wedding, Silas," Clara whispered, stepping close and pressing her lips gently against his. "I don't need the city's approval. I just need you. And Julian."

"You have us," Silas promised, his arms tightening around her. "Forever."

Clara looked out over the terrace, past the ornamental fountain where she had once fallen as a victim. The water sparkled innocently in the sunlight. She was no longer the drowning girl. She was the storm that controlled the sea.

"Forever," Clara agreed, resting her head against his chest, ready for whatever the future held, knowing that their vows, forged in water and blood, were entirely, undeniably unbreakable.
