Chapter 55 - The Fall of Lorenzo Castiglione

Claire walked out onto the mezzanine balcony overlooking the grand ballroom, Matteo at her side, leaving Julian bound and gagged with server cable in the control room.
The music had stopped. The champagne had ceased flowing.
On the three massive screens flanking the gilded stage, Lorenzo Castiglione's private ledgers were rolling in stark, black-and-white text for eighty of the world’s most powerful elites to see. Every bribe, every murder payout, every fraudulent transaction with Arthur Bennett was laid bare under the bright glare of the projectors.
And in the center of the main screen, in bold crimson letters, flashed the final transaction notice:
**ALL ASSETS OF THE SAN MARCO SYNDICATE HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE HOUSE OF VALMONT. ACCOUNT BALANCE: ZERO.**
Lorenzo Castiglione stood frozen on the stage, the auction gavel slipping from his fingers and clattering hollowly against the parquet floor. His face was purple with rage and utter disbelief.
"Who did this?!" Lorenzo roared into his microphone, his voice echoing through the silent, terrified crowd. "Security! Cut the power! Lock the doors!"
"The doors won't open for you, Lorenzo," a clear, melodic voice rang out from the high mezzanine.
The entire ballroom turned, their masked faces craning upward.
Claire stepped to the ornate marble railing. Slowly, deliberately, she untied the black silk ribbon of her mask and let it fall. The serpent mask fluttered down through the air, landing softly on the ballroom floor below.
Her face was bare. Her eyes—brilliant, icy blue, radiating absolute authority—locked onto Lorenzo.
"Claire Bennett?" Lorenzo whispered, stumbling back against the podium, his voice carrying through the open mic. "No... that’s impossible. You're Arthur’s domestic drudge!"
"My name is Claire Valmont," she announced, her voice ringing with the weight of an unbroken dynasty. "Arthur Bennett was your puppet. But I am the master who cut his strings. Your money is gone, Lorenzo. Your ships in Genoa are being seized by the coast guard as we speak. And Italian federal agents are already surrounding your water-gate."
As if on cue, the heavy oak doors of the palazzo burst open. Dozens of armed Carabinieri and tactical Interpol officers flooded the ballroom, weapons raised, shouting commands in Italian that brought the billionaire guests screaming to their knees.
Lorenzo lunged for a weapon concealed beneath the auction podium, but a single, echoing gunshot cracked through the hall.
The bullet struck the marble podium inches from Lorenzo’s hand, shattering it into dust.
Standing at the side entrance of the ballroom, flanked by four elite operatives, stood Genevieve Valmont, lowering a smoking silver pistol.
"Checkmate, old friend," Genevieve said, her voice cutting through the panic like a blade.
Claire watched from above as the federal agents tackled Lorenzo to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. He screamed curses, his aristocratic dignity completely obliterated, as he was dragged across his own ballroom floor into the waiting police boats.
Claire took a deep, shuddering breath. For twenty-four years, she had carried the invisible weight of a servant's chains. In one night, she had dismantled the syndicate that had stolen her life.
She turned to Matteo. For the first time, he smiled—a warm, radiant smile that melted the lethal soldier's mask completely. He reached out, gently taking her hand.

"It's over, Signorina Valmont," Matteo said softly. "You won."
