Chapter 39 - The Fracture in the Courtyard

“Two minutes, Claire!” Julian’s voice cracked through the intercom, escalating in pitch. “Don’t test me! You always thought you were smarter than everyone else because you read those dusty financial reports while I played lacrosse. But look who’s holding the knife now!”

Claire didn't answer. Her fingers danced across the secondary keypad concealed beneath the mahogany console. She didn't unlock the blast doors. Instead, she routed the villa’s primary commercial generators directly through the exterior floodlight grid, overloading the transformer on the northern wall.

Inside the salon, the air grew heavy with the sharp, ozone smell of building electrical current.

“Claire!” Genevieve shrieked. “What are you doing? He’s going to kill him!”

“Count down from five, Genevieve,” Claire murmured.

Outside, Julian raised the serrated blade, pressing the steel into Matteo’s skin until blood trickled freely over his knuckles. “Time's up, you ungrateful little b—”

*CRACK.*

The main transformer detonated in a blinding spray of blue-white sparks.

Simultaneously, every floodlight mounted along the limestone walls shattered, plunging the courtyard into absolute, suffocating darkness. The only illumination left was the frantic, sweeping beams of the tactical flashlights attached to the mercenaries’ rifles.

“Contact! Lights are down!” a contractor shouted in Russian, his boots crunching over the gravel as weapon safeties clicked off in rapid succession.

“Stand your ground!” Julian shrieked into the dark, his voice hysterical. “Keep the perimeter tight! She’s still inside!”

In that fraction of a second, Matteo did not wait. Using the sudden blindness of his captors, he dropped his center of gravity, driving his shoulder back into Julian’s knees with the force of a battering ram.

Julian stumbled backward with a startled yelp, dropping the knife into the wet grass. Matteo twisted, rolling across the stone courtyard despite the heavy zip-ties binding his wrists behind his back.

“Kill him!” Julian screamed, scrambling on his hands and knees through the mud. “Shoot him! Don't let him reach the terrace!”

Muzzle flashes ripped through the pitch-black fog. Bullets tore into the ancient stone walls, shattering the terra-cotta planters into fragments. But Claire was already moving.

She had bypassed the main doors entirely. Slipping through the narrow servant door built into the western retaining wall, she emerged into the damp sea mist carrying a heavy iron lever used to control the estate's gravity-fed fountain system.

She didn't run toward the gunfire. She ran toward the control valve hidden behind the marble bust of Augustus Caesar.

With a sharp grunt, Claire jammed the iron lever into the master release and hauled it downward with all her body weight.

A deafening groan echoed through the cliffside pipes. The high-pressure irrigation system—originally designed to pump hundreds of gallons of seawater per minute to protect the hanging gardens from forest fires—burst to life. Massive jets of pressurized water tore through the darkness, hitting the mercenaries full in the chest, knocking two of them off the terrace edge and blinding the remaining shooters in a violent, freezing cascade.
