Chapter 38 - The Terms of Blood

The silence inside the grand salon stretched so taut that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock sounded like hammer strikes against an anvil.

Claire studied the perimeter screen. Julian was not alone. Behind him, standing by the running engines of the four black SUVs, were six private contractors armed with compact submachine guns. They wore unmarked tactical gear—clean, efficient, and detached. They were mercenaries, paid to do a job, but Julian was the loose cannon directing their aim.

“Claire,” Genevieve breathed, creeping forward, her eyes wide with terror. “You have to give him the override key. If he kills the boy, he’ll blow the hydraulic doors off their hinges with thermite. Those men aren't Valmont loyalists—they’re Eastern European clean-up crews. They’ll slaughter every living thing inside this house to make sure there are no witnesses for the federal marshals!”

“Be quiet,” Claire commanded, her tone dropping to an absolute, unyielding whisper.

She tapped the audio transmitter again. “What do you want, Julian? If you wanted me dead, you wouldn't have bothered taking Matteo alive. You would have launched an RPG through the courtyard glass ten minutes ago.”

Julian smiled. It was the same condescending, sickening grin he had worn every Thanksgiving when he forced Claire to sit at the folding card table while he sat at the head of the banquet.

“I see prison didn't completely dull your brain, sister,” Julian purred. “Here are the house rules. Dad and I have spent the last six months watching you turn our family name into an international punchline. You emptied the Manhattan accounts. You seized the trust funds. You made our mother grovel in a cold parlor.”

He jerked Matteo’s collar roughly, causing the wounded man to hiss through clenched teeth.

“You have twenty million in bearer bonds locked in the master safe beneath the wine cellar,” Julian continued, reciting the figures with robotic greed. “You also hold the cryptographic master key to the offshore shell companies in the Caymans. I want the physical flash drive, I want the bonds loaded into the trunk of my SUV, and I want you to walk out those doors with your hands above your head.”

“And Matteo?” Claire asked.

“Once we verify the ledger matches the central server, the boy stays behind to mop up his own blood,” Julian sneered. “You get three minutes to unlock the outer gate, Claire. If the lights on that panel don’t turn green by the time I count to one hundred and eighty, I take Matteo’s right ear. Let's see how much your little bodyguard loves you when he can’t hear you scream.”

Claire’s thumb hovered over the console. On the camera, Matteo was mouthing something through the pain.

*Non aprire.* Do not open.

Claire closed her eyes for half a second. She reached into the pocket of her tailored blazer, feeling the cold weight of the heavy brass skeleton key she had taken from the Ravenna vault. It was not a weapon. It was something far more dangerous: the blueprint of every hidden tunnel dug beneath the limestone cliff during the Second World War.

“Genevieve,” Claire whispered without looking back. “Do you want to survive the night?”

Genevieve nodded frantically, tears carving tracks through her expensive foundation. “Anything. I’ll give you everything, Claire. Just don’t let Julian inside.”

“Then pick up that silver decanter from the side table,” Claire said quietly, her eyes locking onto the monitors. “Because when I turn off the courtyard lights, you are going to run down the service stairwell, and you are not going to stop until you reach the sea.”
