Chapter 32 - Blood on the Silk

The air in the subterranean corridor tasted of cordite, shattered marble, and burning hydraulic fluid.

Before the three mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, Dante’s remaining two security guards leaned around the corner of the elevator vestibule, unleashing a synchronized volley of fire. Two of the attackers dropped instantly; the third, wounded in the shoulder, scrambled backward into the service stairwell.

“Move! We have to secure the street level before local police seal the perimeter!” Dante shouted, reloading his sidearm with mechanical precision. Blood was dripping down his left cheek from a shrapnel cut.

Matteo hauled Claire to her feet, his body completely shielding hers as they sprinted toward the service elevator. But as they entered the metal cage, Claire felt a wet, hot stickiness soaking through Matteo’s tailored charcoal jacket.

She looked down. Her hand came away coated in crimson.

“Matteo!” Claire gasped, the breath seizing in her chest. A stray round during the breach had caught him in the lower abdomen, just beneath the edge of his Kevlar lining.

“It’s a through-and-through,” Matteo grimaced, his face going gray, though his jaw remained clenched like granite. He leaned heavily against the elevator wall, pressing a clean linen handkerchief against the wound. “Don't look at me, Claire. Look at the ledger. Look at what they were trying to burn.”

The elevator shot upward, bypassing the bank’s chaos and opening directly into a private underground loading bay where a secondary armored SUV sat idling with its hazard lights flashing.

Dante shoved them into the rear passenger compartment, slamming the doors shut as the driver slammed the accelerator, peeling rubber across the concrete floor and bursting through the garage doors into the torrential Milan rain.

Inside the speeding vehicle, Claire tore off her silk scarf, pressing it down on Matteo’s wound with all her strength. “Hold this! Dante, call our private clinic in Monza! Tell Dr. Ferri we need a surgical suite ready in twenty minutes!”

“Already done, Signora,” Dante said from the front seat, his eyes glued to the rearview mirrors. “Two chase vehicles picked us up off the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. High-performance Alfa Romeos. They aren't local syndicate. These are private military contractors.”

Matteo reached up, his bloody fingers curling around Claire’s hand over his wound. “Listen to me… Claire. Look at the hard drive… look at the signatures.”

Claire held down the pressure with her right hand while her left connected the drive into her ruggedized laptop. The screen flashed blue, decrypting the Vance master files using the titanium keycard’s root certificate.

A single dossier popped up on the display. It was an operative dossier dated three weeks ago.

The client who had authorized the mercenary hit on Vault 404, the client who had funded the private army to wipe out Claire and Matteo, was not an anonymous banking executive.

The funds had been released from an escrow account established in a private trust in Geneva, signed by a thumbprint and a verified biometric signature.

The name on the signature line made Claire’s blood run cold:

*Victoria Bennett.*

And beneath Victoria’s name was an addendum signed by Julian Bennett from his medical wing at Otisville Correctional Facility:

*“Payment upon confirmation of Claire Vance’s termination. All proceeds to be redirected to the Amalfi sanctuary.”*

“Victoria…” Claire whispered, her voice trembling with an explosive mixture of disbelief and utter revulsion. “Evan is rotting in prison. Julian is facing thirty years for corporate fraud and attempted murder. Where did they get fifty million euros to hire a paramilitary strike force?”

“They didn't get it from Evan,” Matteo coughed, a thin line of blood touching his lip. “Evan was broke. Julian was broke. Someone gave it to them, Claire. Someone gave Victoria the keys to the kingdom to finish the job Evan failed to do.”

“The Amalfi sanctuary,” Claire read from the screen, her eyes narrowing into cold slits of emerald ice. “A private clifftop estate registered under a shell company called *La Fenice*. The Phoenix.”

“That’s her,” Matteo whispered, his consciousness slipping as his eyes began to roll back. “Genevieve… she didn't just escape the prison. She bought the wardens.”

The SUV screeched around a hairpin turn outside Monza, the sirens of their private medical escort wailing through the night. Claire held Matteo against her chest, her tears falling onto his blood-soaked shirt, her heart hardening into a diamond that no fire could ever melt.

“Hang on, Matteo,” she whispered against his ear. “Hang on for me. Because when I finish this… there will be no monsters left in the dark.”
