Chapter 54 - Checkmate in Venice

Julian began to tremble so violently that his champagne glass slipped from his fingers. Matteo caught it inches from the floor without spilling a drop, setting it silently on a side table.
"Claire... please..." Julian sobbed quietly, tears of absolute terror leaking from beneath his mask. "I didn't know! Dad told me everything was legally mine! I didn't know he stole your trust! Lorenzo is going to kill me, Claire! You have to help me!"
"Help you?" Claire’s laugh was soft, deadly, and entirely devoid of mercy. "On Christmas Eve, you stood in our kitchen while Arthur handed me a chore list, laughing while you told your friends I was born to serve you. You watched me scrub your boots, Julian."
"I was stupid! I was an idiot!"
"Yes, you were," Claire agreed smoothly. "And now you are going to open that server room door on the third floor. Because as Lorenzo's 'honored guest,' your biometric guest pass has executive floor clearance. Move."
With the ceramic gun pressed firmly against his spine beneath his jacket, Julian led Claire and Matteo up the private marble staircase, avoiding the security checkpoints. Every step Julian took sounded like a funeral march.
They reached the heavy brass-reinforced door of the master server suite. Julian held up his trembling VIP keycard. The scanner beeped green.
The heavy door slid open.
Inside, rows of black server towers hummed beneath chilled, blue ambient lighting. In the center of the room sat the master terminal displaying the live auction status. The bids from anonymous accounts across the globe were already climbing: *1.2 Billion Euros... 1.5 Billion Euros...*
"Matteo, guard the door," Claire commanded.
She shoved Julian into a rolling office chair and took her place in front of the console. Reaching into her evening clutch, she pulled out a sleek titanium flash drive loaded with Genevieve’s custom malware and slammed it into the primary port.
"Initiating transfer," Claire said into her earpiece.
*"I have the link,"* Genevieve’s voice crackled through the ear cuff. *"The worm is bypassing Lorenzo's firewalls. But Claire, Lorenzo just took the stage in the grand ballroom. He's about to hammer the final sale of the Valmont reserves in three minutes!"*
Claire’s fingers moved across the keyboard in a blinding flurry of inputs. "He won't finish the auction."
"What are you doing?" Julian whined from the corner. "If he finds out—"
"Shut up, Julian," Claire snapped.
She bypassed the auction encryption protocols, hijacked the palazzo's central audio-visual broadcasting network, and initiated an emergency global wire transfer, sweeping every offshore euro from Lorenzo Castiglione's personal vaults directly into the newly incorporated Valmont Sovereign Trust in Zurich.
Then, with one final stroke of the return key, she routed the entire live feed from the server room—along with forty years of money laundering documents, assassination contracts, and federal evidence—directly to the massive 4K projection screens in the grand ballroom downstairs, and simultaneously to Interpol, the FBI, and the European Central Bank.

Below them, a deafening gasp echoed up through the palace floors.
