Chapter 36 - The Chasm Between Two Queens

Genevieve stumbled back against her leather chair, clutching her emerald gown, stripped of her weapons, her leverage, and her illusion of control.

“What do you want, Claire?” Genevieve spat, her voice shaking with venomous defeat. “You want me to beg? You want an apology? You want me to tell you I’m sorry for the Christmases you spent scrubbing floors while your brother opened his sports cars? I will never apologize. I survived!”

“I don't want your apology,” Claire said, tossing the empty pistol into a glass display cabinet, shattering the antique crystal inside into a thousand glittering shards. “An apology from you is as worthless as the promises Evan Bennett made to my father. I’m taking the Valmont Sovereign Trust. I’m taking the Frascati estate. I’m taking the four billion euros. And you are going to stay right here, in this fortress, until the sea reclaims the stone.”

“You can't imprison me!” Genevieve shrieked, her regal composure entirely disintegrating. “I have contacts in Bern! I have private security across the Mediterranean! I built this empire!”

“Your contacts took their orders from the escrow account,” Claire said, walking calmly to the main control terminal. She inserted the titanium keycard into the master console. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. “And as of twelve seconds ago, the master administrator access to Villa La Fenice, its private offshore bank accounts, its communication arrays, and its maritime logistics has been transferred to the Vance-Moretti Sovereign Foundation.”

The screens across the entire salon suddenly blinked red.

*ACCESS REVOKED: USER GENEVIEVE VANCE.*

*PRIMARY ADMINISTRATOR: CLAIRE VANCE-MORETTI.*

The steel shutters over the panoramic windows began to slowly grind upward, revealing the black, churning sea below and the distant lightning flashing across the horizon.

“You are a prisoner of your own grave, Genevieve,” Claire said, turning toward the heavy oak doors as they unlocked with a heavy hydraulic thud. “The local authorities won't come for you. Evan Bennett won't come for you. You will live out your days with your monitors and your ghosts, watching me build the dynasty you were too cowardly to protect.”

Claire turned her back on her mother and walked toward the exit.

“Claire!” Genevieve screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, feral wail that bounced off the cold limestone walls. “You think you won? You think you solved the riddle? You didn't check the perimeter logs from yesterday!”

Claire stopped at the threshold, her hand on the brass door handle. A sudden prickle of cold dread crept up the base of her neck.

“What did you say?” Claire asked, not looking back.

Genevieve began to laugh—a high, broken, hysterical sound that sent a chill through the warm Mediterranean air. She pointed a trembling finger at the central surveillance screen displaying the exterior approach to the Amalfi estate.

“I didn't hire Victoria to kill you in Milan, Claire!” Genevieve cackled, tears of manic hysteria streaming down her powdered cheeks. “I hired Victoria to bring me *him*! I needed the only leverage that could force you to surrender the trust!”

Claire spun around, her eyes widening as she looked at the surveillance monitor.

On the screen, four armored tactical vehicles were currently breaching the outer iron gates of Villa La Fenice, their headlights blazing through the sea mist.

Emerging from the lead vehicle was not a team of Italian mercenaries.

Stepping into the courtyard, wearing a pristine tailored suit, his face thin, pale, and distorted by an unhinged, predatory grin, was Julian Bennett.

He had not escaped Otisville on his own. He had been broken out by a private military extraction team funded by Genevieve Vance herself.

And dragged behind Julian, bound in heavy zip-ties, his face covered in fresh bruises and his white surgical bandages soaked through with fresh crimson blood, was Matteo.

Julian looked directly up into the courtyard security camera. He drew a serrated combat knife from his belt, held the blade directly against Matteo’s throat, and tapped the estate’s external intercom button.

A voice that Claire had heard in her nightmares for twenty years boomed through the speakers of the salon, thick with sadistic delight:

*“Merry Christmas, little sister. Dad sent me to make sure you finish the list.”*
