Chapter 53 - The Unexpected Pawn

Claire’s breath caught in her throat, her fingers tightening involuntarily against Matteo’s arm.
Julian. Her arrogant, useless brother, whom she had left stranded in the wreckage of Arthur’s empire, facing federal indictments and total ruin. Yet here he was, standing in a Venetian palace, dressed in a tuxedo that was clearly rented, looking pale, terrified, and thoroughly out of his depth.
"Julian," Matteo whispered through his teeth, his hand twitching toward his jacket. "How the hell did he get here? He was supposed to be in custody in New York."
"Bail," Claire realized, her mind racing. "Arthur must have stashed emergency offshore funds that escaped the freeze. Julian used them to buy a fake passport and fled to the only man Arthur ever spoke of in private: Lorenzo Castiglione."
Through the micro-transceiver in Claire’s ear, Genevieve’s voice cut through with chilling clarity: *"Julian is a loose end. He doesn't know who you really are, Claire, but if he recognizes your voice or posture, he could ruin the infiltration before you reach the server. Avoid him."*
"No," Claire whispered back into her collar microphone. "Julian is an idiot. And an idiot is always useful."
"Claire, what are you doing?" Matteo warned quietly as she began gliding across the polished marble floor, cutting gracefully through the crowd of masked elites.
"Playing the hand I was dealt," she said.
Claire positioned herself near a marble column just behind where Julian was frantically whispering to Lorenzo Castiglione.
"—I'm telling you, Lorenzo, my father hid the secondary account numbers in an offline drive before the feds raided the estate!" Julian stammered, sweat beading on his forehead beneath his crude gold mask. "I can get them for you! I just need five million euros to get to Dubai, set up a new identity—"
Lorenzo didn't even turn his head. He took a slow sip of his vintage Barolo, his voice dripping with disgust. "Your father was a pathetic bookkeeper who let a little girl steal his entire life out from under him, Julian. You are his son: equally worthless, equally loud. The only reason my men let you into this palazzo tonight is so I can ensure you don't talk to the international police before my auction concludes."
Lorenzo snapped his fingers. Two burly security guards stepped out of the shadows, grabbing Julian roughly by both arms.
"Wait! Lorenzo, please! We're partners!" Julian gasped, his voice cracking with panic as they began dragging him toward a private side salon.
Claire stepped smoothly into their path, pretending to dodge a passing waiter. She collided gently with Julian’s side.
Julian stumbled, glaring down furiously through his mask. "Watch it, you—"
He stopped dead.
Claire tilted her head just enough for the ballroom chandelier to illuminate her piercing blue eyes through the serpent mask. She didn't say a word. She merely held his gaze, a cold, mocking smirk playing on her lips.
Julian’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him a sickening shade of gray. His eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror.
"Y-You..." Julian choked out, his vocal cords seizing. "Claire?!"
"You always did have terrible manners at parties, Julian," Claire whispered, her voice like silk over razor wire.
Before Julian could scream for help, Matteo materialized behind the two guards dragging him. With two lightning-fast, silent strikes to the nerve clusters in their necks, both guards sagged unconscious against the heavy velvet drapery of the corridor. Matteo smoothly caught them, shoving them out of sight behind the heavy tapestry, while Claire pressed the cold muzzle of her ceramic pistol directly against Julian’s ribs.

"Make a sound, brother," Claire whispered sweetly into his ear, "and the police won't have to worry about your trial."
