Chapter 31 - The Ambush in Milan

The autumn rain turned the polished marble of Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II into a shimmering black mirror. Beneath the towering glass dome, high-fashion shoppers and international financiers hurried past glittering shop windows, oblivious to the silent war being fought thirty meters beneath their feet.
Claire, dressed in a tailored midnight-blue trench coat and dark sunglasses, walked side by side with Matteo through the private arched entrance of the Banca Privata di Lombardia. Four of Dante’s elite security operatives followed at a discreet distance, their hands resting inside bespoke overcoats.
“The manager was briefed through the Zurich protocols,” Matteo murmured as they entered the private elevator. “He believes we are conducting an annual audit of the Vance sovereign reserves. He doesn't know about Vault 404.”
The elevator plunged deep into the subterranean bedrock of Milan, arriving at the private vault concourse—a subterranean fortress of brushed steel, biometric scanners, and thick bulletproof glass partitions.
A nervous Swiss-Italian bank director named Signor Castiglione greeted them with an obsequious bow. “Signora Vance-Moretti, Lord Matteo. It is an extraordinary honor. The private sector was sealed under strict instructions from the late Signor Arthur Vance. Nobody has accessed the sub-level in three decades.”
“Take us to Corridor 4,” Claire instructed, her tone brooking no delay.
Castiglione swiped his master key, leading them past towering rows of safe deposit boxes toward the oldest section of the vault—a corridor where the walls transitioned from modern composite steel to 19th-century granite blocks. At the very end stood a monolithic door bearing no number plate, only a recessed electronic terminal that looked shockingly out of place against the ancient stone.
“I must leave you here,” Castiglione stammered, stepping back. “The security protocol triggers lethal gas countermeasures if an unauthorized person lingers within five meters during an access attempt.”
“Wait by the elevator,” Matteo ordered Dante’s men, keeping his right hand resting on the holster concealed beneath his lapel.
Claire stepped forward. She pulled the titanium keycard from her pocket and inserted it into the narrow slot.
The terminal chirped. A mechanical hum vibrated through the floorboards. The heavy steel door recessed three inches and glided silently into the wall.
Inside, the vault was small, illuminated by recessed halogen lights. In the center of the room sat a single steel pedestal holding an open, active digital satellite uplink console and three thick binders labeled *PROJECT BASILISK: CONSORTIUM ROSTER*.
Claire moved toward the binders, but Matteo’s hand shot out, catching her wrist. “Wait.”
He pointed his flashlight toward the ceiling. Tiny, almost invisible laser tripwires crisscrossed the space three inches above the binders. And attached to the wall behind the pedestal was an explosive charge wired directly into the room’s biometric sensors.
Suddenly, the heavy vault door behind them began to slide shut with terrifying speed.
“Trap!” Matteo roared, shoving Claire backward toward the narrow opening.
Before the door could seal them in, a heavy titanium crowbar was wedged into the hydraulic track, sparks flying in an explosive shower. Dante threw his entire body against the door, his teeth bared in agony as the pneumatic pressure threatened to crush his spine.
“Ambush! Hostiles on the elevator concourse!” Dante yelled over the deafening blare of the bank’s security sirens.
Gunfire erupted down the marble corridor—suppressed, rapid, military-grade automatic fire. The glass partitions of the bank shattered into thousands of deadly projectiles. Signor Castiglione collapsed to the ground, shot through the throat before he could utter a scream.
Matteo drew his weapon, firing two controlled shots into the mist of pulverized glass. A mercenary in black tactical gear crumpled to the polished floor.
“Claire, get the documents!” Matteo shouted, using his shoulder to assist Dante in holding the crushing weight of the hydraulic door. “Now!”
Claire didn't hesitate. Ignoring the shrieking sirens and the lethal laser matrix, she dropped to her knees, slid across the polished steel floor beneath the laser lines like a gymnast, and grabbed the central hard drive and the primary ledger.
As she ripped the drive from the dock, the countdown timer on the wall charge began to beep rapidly: *00:00:15… 00:00:14…*
“Out! Claire, move!” Matteo screamed.
She rolled backward under the beams, her coat tearing against the sharp steel edge of the pedestal, and lunged toward the doorway. Matteo caught her outstretched hand, yanking her violently through the narrow gap just as Dante pulled the crowbar free.
The monolithic steel door slammed shut with a thunderous *CRANG*.
A split second later, a muffled detonation shook the foundation of the bank. The shockwave threw Claire and Matteo against the granite corridor wall as thick black smoke poured from the door’s ventilation seals.

Down the corridor, three more armed operatives advanced through the smoke, their laser sights cutting through the haze, locking onto Claire’s chest.
