Chapter 12 - The Gala of the Century

Six months later, the restoration of the Palazzo della Rovere reached its glorious completion.

The historic building, once neglected and threatened by water damage and foundation decay, had been transformed into the city’s most breathtaking center for Mediterranean arts and literature. The ancient frescoes had been restored with surgical precision; the grand central courtyard now boasted a floating glass and titanium mezzanine that seemed to hover weightlessly above the ancient stone foundations—Claire’s signature structural design.

Tonight was the international inauguration gala.

Searchlights swept across the Roman night sky, illuminating the timeless facade of the palazzo. Limousines lined the Via della Conciliazione, dropping off ambassadors, ministers of culture, world-renowned architects, and European nobility.

Claire stood on the glass mezzanine, looking down at the hundreds of guests mingling in the courtyard below. She wore a bespoke gown of emerald green silk that draped elegantly over her shoulders, her dark hair woven with delicate golden pins shaped like olive leaves. On her finger, a brilliant sapphire ring sparkled under the chandelier light—Matteo had proposed to her on the terrace of their Frascati villa three weeks earlier.

"You look like an empress," Matteo said, appearing at her side with two glasses of champagne. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo, looking every bit the legendary master of Italian design, yet the look in his eyes when he looked at Claire was one of sheer adoration.

"I don't feel like an empress," Claire laughed softly, clinking her glass against his. "I feel like a girl who finally found the right room to stand in."

"You did not just find the room, *mio amore*," Matteo smiled. "You built it."

At that moment, the Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage tapped the microphone at the grand podium downstairs. The chatter in the hall hushed as the minister addressed the audience.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the minister began, his voice carrying through the acoustic perfection of the hall. "Rome has survived for millennia not because its stones never crumble, but because every generation produces visionary minds capable of breathing new life into our history. Tonight, we celebrate two such visionaries."

The crowd erupted into polite applause.

"Matteo Rossi has long been the pride of our nation. But tonight, we must pay tribute to the mind behind the revolutionary stabilization that saved this irreplaceable landmark. A woman who proved that modern engineering and ancient soul can dance together without breaking—Architetto Claire Bennett."

A thunderous wave of applause filled the cavernous palace. Dignitaries and master architects stood on their feet, looking up at the mezzanine, raising their glasses to Claire.

Claire felt a warm, swelling pride rise from deep within her chest. She remembered sitting in the dark kitchen on Christmas Eve, looking at the scribbled chore list: *Clean the baseboards. Make sure Evan's friends have hot appetizers.*

She had burned that list. And in its place, she had written her name into the history of the Eternal City.

She bowed her head gracefully, accepting the tribute, her hand locked tightly within Matteo’s warm, strong grip.
