Chapter 24 - The Valmont Sovereign

One month later, the city of Geneva gleamed under a blanket of pristine alpine snow.
At the historic headquarters of Valmont Estate Holdings—a palatial 18th-century chateau overlooking Lake Geneva—the grand boardroom was filled with the continent's most powerful financiers, board members, and legacy stakeholders. For thirty years, the board had operated under the assumption that the Vance-Valmont lineage would eventually revert to distant corporate trusts.
Today, the rightful sovereign had arrived to claim the seat.
The double doors of solid oak swung open. Claire entered the room.
She wore an ivory wool pantsuit tailored to perfection, with Genevieve’s emerald necklace resting elegantly against her collarbone. Beside her walked Matteo, commanding and composed in a dark charcoal suit, accompanied by Christian Vance carrying the official ledger of the Valmont Trust.
Every board member stood up instantly. Several older directors, men in their seventies who had served under Claire’s grandfather, gasped audibly. The sight of Claire walking through those doors was like seeing Genevieve Vance brought back to life, crowned with an even fiercer, unyielding authority.
Claire walked to the head of the long mahogany table, where the high-backed leather chair of Arthur Vance sat vacant. She did not ask for permission. She pulled the chair out and sat down.
“Good morning, gentlemen,” Claire said, her voice carrying an effortless, resonant clarity that commanded absolute silence. “I believe you have all reviewed the forensic audits and the legal decrees issued by the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.”
The senior director, an austere Swiss banker named Henri Beaumont, cleared his throat and stepped forward. “Miss Vance... we have reviewed everything. The documentation is indisputable. But managing an empire of this magnitude requires more than bloodline. It requires structural vision. It requires leadership in an era of global volatility.”
Claire smiled faintly. She opened a slim leather portfolio and slid a series of blueprints across the table to Beaumont.
“These are the preliminary structural schematics for the European Cultural Heritage Corridor,” Claire stated smoothly. “A five-hundred-million-euro infrastructure initiative spanning northern Italy and southern Switzerland, integrating historic stone conservation with net-zero geothermal architecture. The Italian Ministry of Culture and the Canton of Vaud have already signed letters of intent. The architectural design is mine. The capital allocation will come from Valmont Holdings.”
Beaumont stared at the blueprints, his experienced eyes widening at the technical brilliance and sheer elegance of the designs. He looked from the paper to Claire, his skepticism dissolving into profound respect.
“You didn't just inherit this estate,” Beaumont whispered, bowing his head slightly. “You are the master builder Arthur Vance prayed you would become.”
The rest of the board followed suit, bowing their heads in unanimous recognition.
“From this moment forward,” Claire announced, looking around the table, “Valmont Holdings will no longer operate as a passive trust. We will build. We will restore. And we will ensure that every foundation we lay is built on truth, integrity, and unassailable stone.”

She signed her name to the master charter: *Claire Vance-Valmont*.
With a single stroke of the pen, thirty years of obscurity, pain, and theft were erased. The name Bennett was a forgotten footnote in the annals of criminal law. The name Vance had returned to its throne.
