Chapter 65 - The Cold Architecture of Betrayal

The air in the wardroom felt thick, smelling of expensive leather, salted air, and old blood. I looked down at Victoria's handwriting, tracing the cold ink that had signed away the lives of the three people who were my entire existence.

My parents had ignored their deaths for a birthday cake. Arthur had carried out the mechanics. Victoria had approved the ledger. But the machine that demanded their blood was sitting right across from me, eating an apple.

"What is the Archon Syndicate?" I asked quietly, closing the notebook.

"We are the balance sheet of the modern world," Croft replied, pleased by my apparent composure. "Governments require wars they cannot publicly finance; corporations require acquisitions they cannot legally execute. We provide the liquidity, the deniability, and the enforcement. Victoria managed our North American industrial assets. You will assume her portfolio."

"And if I refuse?"

"Ethan dies first," Croft said casually. "We will peel his fingernails back one by one while you watch via closed-circuit television. Then we will drain your bloodline's remaining trusts dollar by dollar, foundation by foundation, until nothing remains but ash. Then you will join him."

He stood, walking to the reinforced glass window overlooking the frothing wake of the frigate. "You possess Victoria's intellect, Claire, but with a terrifying modern efficiency. What took her forty years to build, you tore down in six months with a laptop, a ledger, and cold fury. We don't want to destroy that kind of talent. We want to employ it."

I looked down at my hands. They were stained with smoke and grease from the Genesis Vault. For half a year, I had believed that executing Arthur and watching my mother and Evelyn rot in federal cells would bring peace. But vengeance is a hydra; cut off the venomous heads of the Vance family, and the ancient beast beneath them simply opens its eyes.

If I died here, David and the children would truly be forgotten. Their real killers would sail on in custom frigates, dining on crystal and manipulating nations.

"I need Ethan alive," I said, my voice dropping into a register colder than the North Atlantic outside. "Unconditionally. He receives full medical treatment and remains by my side as my personal security officer."

Croft turned, a slow, predatory smirk spreading across his aristocratic face. "A sentimental request, but granted. Loyalty has utility. What else?"

"I want the complete unredacted archives of Victoria’s accounts with your syndicate," I said, rising to meet his gaze. "If I am to balance her debt, I will not do it blind."

"A businesswoman after my own heart," Croft said, offering his gloved hand.

I did not take it. I simply stared into his amber eyes until his smile thinned and his hand lowered.

"Take me to your command hub, Croft," I said. "Let's see what my family actually owed you."
