Chapter 58 - The Chamber of the Serpent

The interior of the island bunker was a cavernous cathedral of reinforced concrete, cold steel, and dead silence.
The smell was distinct: hydraulic fluid, dry ozone, and the suffocating stillness of a tomb that had remained sealed for decades. Giant banks of vintage server racks stood dormant in the shadows, their green power indicators glowing in rhythmic synchronization with the island’s geothermal generators.
At the end of a long, narrow catwalk suspended over a deep drainage reservoir stood the vault door—a six-foot-thick disc of hardened tungsten carbide, flanked by two biometric pedestal stations.
Arthur motioned his contractors to stay at the threshold of the catwalk, keeping Ethan, Leo, and Maya pinned at rifle point forty feet back.
"Only you and me on the bridge, Claire," Arthur said, his hand resting on the holster at his hip. "Come."
I looked back at Ethan. He gave me a single, imperceptible nod.
I stepped onto the metal grating of the catwalk, my boots echoing into the subterranean void below. The cold air stung my cheeks, but my mind was completely clear, the pounding adrenaline settling into an icy, surgical focus.
We reached the pedestal.
A high-resolution retinal scanner and a vascular palm-print plate flickered to life upon our approach, a digitized voice echoing from the console: *[BLOODLINE PROTOCOL INITIATED. IDENTIFYING MATERNAL HEIRS.]*
"Ladies first," Arthur sneered, gesturing toward the left pedestal.
I looked at the glowing green plate. "If I do this, you let them take the interceptor boat. You stay here with the server drives."
"You have my word as a Vance," Arthur said with sickening sincerity.
"That word is worth less than the dirt on my boots," I replied.
I placed my palm against the glass plate and leaned forward into the retinal reticle.
A bright blue laser swept across my eye, stinging the optic nerve. Beneath my hand, the plate hummed as thermal and vascular sensors mapped the blood vessels in my palm.

Arthur stepped up to the right pedestal with a triumphant, predatory grin. "Forty years of Victoria’s games, and it all ends with me."
He pressed his hand to the scanner, leaning his scarred face into the retinal housing.
The laser flashed.

A heavy, pneumatic hiss echoed through the cavern as the massive locking pins inside the tungsten door retracted one by one. The sound was like thunder rolling beneath the earth.
And then, the console's light turned from emerald green to a blinding, flashing crimson.
