Chapter 36 - The Ghost Convoy

The roaring black waters of the North Atlantic hit our faces as the Coast Guard cutter burst from the sea cave, carving through the six-foot swells with twin diesel engines roaring at full throttle.
Behind us, Heron Island was shrinking into the morning mist. High above on the cliff, a brilliant flash of orange light erupted—the Directorate’s long-range cruise missile or precision strike had just annihilated Arthur's mansion and the helipad, vaporizing every trace of their failure. Arthur Vance had received his final payout.
Inside the cutter’s fortified cabin, Maya and Leo were finally asleep on a bench, wrapped in heavy thermal blankets, their breathing rhythmic and deep. Ethan sat beside them, his hand resting on mine. Our fingers were intertwined so tightly the knuckles were white.
"I thought I lost my mind, Claire," he whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at our children. "They kept me in a dark room with headphones pumping static into my ears for weeks at a time. The only thing that kept the synapses firing... was remembering the song you used to sing to Maya when she had colic."
I leaned my head against his shoulder, closing my eyes, letting the tears fall silently onto his arm. "They made me pay for three coffins, Ethan. They made me pick out three headstones while they drank champagne."
"We're going to make them pay it back," Ethan said softly, but the gentleness was gone from his eyes. In its place was a darkness that mirrored my own. "Every cent. Every drop of dignity."
Four hours later, the cutter docked at the secure naval pier in Boston Harbor. We weren't met by local police or press. We were met by an armored convoy of six black Chevrolet Suburbans, surrounded by federal agents carrying submachine guns under heavy overcoats.
Marcus climbed out of the lead vehicle, holding a secure satellite tablet. His face was grim, but a feral smile played at the corner of his mouth.
"Federal Judge Miller just unsealed the indictments based on the data burst Ethan pre-loaded," Marcus said, stepping up to the cutter's gangway. "Arrest warrants have been issued across four states."
"And my sister?" I asked, my voice flat and cold.
"Agent Vance—no relation to Arthur, thank God—is kicking in the door of her Manhattan penthouse right now," Marcus said, turning the screen toward me. "Live feed from the tactical team."
I looked down at the tablet.

On the screen, dynamic body-cam footage showed tactical marshals breaching the double mahogany doors of Evelyn’s multi-million-dollar penthouse on the Upper East Side.
