Chapter 52 - The Cold Awakening

The darkness did not come with peace; it came with the brutal smell of copper, ozone, and wet concrete.

My eyes snapped open, a violent cough tearing through my chest as salt water and bile scraped my throat. Pain radiated from the left side of my skull down into my collarbone—a jagged, throbbing fire where the concussive force of the bullet had grazed the edge of my tactical helmet and sent me hurtling into the churning floodwaters beneath the platform.

I wasn't in the water anymore.

I was strapped upright to a heavy steel pillar, thick industrial zip-ties biting into my wrists and ankles until my extremities went numb. The air was frigid, thick with the hum of high-output diesel generators. Overhead, halogen work lights cast a harsh, bleached glare over a subterranean dry dock.

Ten feet in front of me, leaning against a rusted workbench with an unlit cigarette resting between his scarred lips, stood Arthur Vance Jr.

"You always had a hard head, Claire," he said smoothly, clicking a steel lighter. The flame flickered against his hollow cheekbones, casting his deep-set eyes in sinister shadow. "When you fell off the treehouse at eight years old and took three stitches to the scalp, you didn't even cry. You just stared at Father until he looked away."

"Where are they?" My voice was cracked, raw, barely more than a ragged rasp. "Where is Ethan? Where are my children?"

Arthur blew a thin plume of smoke toward the vaulted ceiling. "Still alive. In the adjacent holding pen. For now." He stepped forward, his heavy tactical boots ringing against the concrete. He reached out with a gloved hand and tilted my chin up, forcing me to look him in the eye. "You did a very thorough job, little sister. The Department of Justice. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. INTERPOL. You didn't just leak the Vance ledgers—you tore the entire empire down to the bedrock."

"Good," I spat, blood flecking his black sleeve. "I hope Father rots in a federal cage. I hope Victoria watches every penny burn."

Arthur chuckled—a cold, humorless sound that rattled like gravel in a drum. "Father is already broken. He collapsed during his preliminary hearing two hours ago. A massive coronary. He’s currently handcuffed to a hospital bed at Bellevue under armed guard, drooling onto a pillow."

He paused, leaning in until I could smell the stale tobacco on his breath. "And Victoria? Our dearest, calculating grandmother? She’s currently sitting in the back of a black van right outside this facility, begging me to save what's left of her legacy. She thinks I brought her here to evacuate her to the offshore sanctuary in the Caymans."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "And you didn't?"

Arthur’s smile widened into something monstrous. "Victoria spent seventy years building a dynasty, and the moment it caught fire, she ran to the only monster she had left. But she made one fatal miscalculation, Claire. She thought the dog would stay on the leash once the house burnt down."
