Chapter 33 - Phantom on the Shoals

The storm tunnels beneath Heron Island smelled of brine, stagnant fuel, and old concrete. Built during the Cold War as a naval monitoring outpost, the subterranean corridors cut deep into the basalt foundation of the island, dead-ending at an auxiliary submarine pen on the western cove.
Ethan leaned heavily against the damp wall, his legs trembling. The sedative cocktails Arthur Vance had pumped into him for half a year had wasted his muscular frame, leaving him pale and gaunt. Yet his eyes never left the children. Maya had buried her face into Ethan’s neck, her tiny fingers clutching the collar of his faded jumpsuit as if the world would dissolve if she let go.
"Leo," Ethan whispered, reaching down with a trembling, scarred hand to stroke our son’s hair. "Look at me, buddy. Look at Dad."
Leo looked up, his lip quivering. "They said... the bad men said you were sleeping in the dirt forever, Daddy. Grandma Eleanor said you were gone."
Ethan’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheekbone. Tears cut tracks through the grime on his skin. "I was fighting to get back to you, Leo. Every single second. I never left you."
I turned away for a fraction of a second to swallow the hot fury rising in my throat. *Grandma Eleanor.* My mother had actually looked into my five-year-old son’s eyes and told him his father was dead, all while packing her designer luggage to attend Evelyn’s lavish birthday gala in the Hamptons.
"Claire," Marcus called softly from the reinforced iron gate twenty yards down the tunnel. He had his thermal optic pressed to a narrow surveillance slit.
I jogged toward him, my boots splashing through shallow pools of brackish water. "What do you see?"
"The sniper wasn't local security," Marcus said grimly, gesturing for me to look. "Look at the bay. Past the Coast Guard cutter."
I pressed my eye to the lens. Through the gray sea spray, a massive black vessel sat anchored three miles out, completely devoid of maritime identification numbers or national flags. It looked like an icebreaker, modified with radar domes and satellite uplinks that belonged to a sovereign navy, not private security.
"Black Rook Mercenaries," Marcus murmured. "They don't work for real estate moguls like your late in-laws, Claire. They operate as the kinetic enforcement arm for the Aegis Directorate—the international pharma-defense consortium. Arthur was laundering Ethan’s bio-encryption research through their shell banks."
"And now Arthur has failed," I said, cold realization sinking into my gut. "So the puppet masters are cutting the strings."
May you like
"They aren't here to rescue Arthur," Marcus said, racking the bolt of his rifle. "They’re here to sterilize the island. And that means no one who knows what Ethan created leaves this cove alive."
